Walking-HomeI liked this book — it was a gratifying read!

Walking Home: A Pilgrimage from Humbled to Healed by Sonia Choquette is the story of Sonia’s recent pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago.

I enjoyed it just like I do a good novel. It’s interesting and entertaining to read about the logistics of the walk itself, and then there’s the extra layer of her personal journey along the way. She’s included beautiful color plates with lots of photos, which — besides just being fun to see — help you tap into yet another dimension of the experience.

I’ve been familiar with Sonia Choquette for a few decades, and learned a lot from her over the years about developing and trusting our intuition. But this is a more personal offering, and I was impressed with her candor regarding her own state of mind and affairs, especially in the beginning but throughout the book. I think there’s a fine line to be walked between marketing yourself as a teacher/advisor, and openly acknowledging your own personal struggles. I appreciated that here she lets it all hang out – or much of it, anyway.

She openly shares the challenges that came up during her pilgrimage, as well as her insights and rewarding experiences. Of course these occur at all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

It feels refreshingly “real”, and her frankness and even outspokenness often made me laugh out loud.

So, besides the story of the developing pilgrimage being interesting in itself, her so authentically offering the personal side of her journey is what gives this book its satisfying richness.

It’s definitely worth a read.

Note: I received this book for free from Hay House Publishing for review purposes and this review reflects my honest evaluation.

Did you know that it’s more natural to be a sprinter than a marathon-er?

That breaks at relatively short intervals are critical for your physical, emotional, and mental well-being?

It’s true.

And if you want some inspiring and motivating reading that will help your productivity while at the same time give you permission — even encouragement — to make balance a priority, you’ll love digging into the bestselling guide The Power of Full Engagement by Loehr & Schwartz. It’s excellent. [I've only had it a few weeks and already I'm more productive -- have you seen how many posts I've cranked out? -- and I feel better at the same time.]

And perfect timing too. You’ll be all revved up for the new year, and ready to enjoy a nice, healthy break in the meantime.

♥ ♥ ♥

I’ll be absent from this blog from now until around Weds., Jan. 4.

I’m off for my own much-needed break where I will reinvigorate my love of all things subtle, intuitive and holographic. To commune with my soul.

The process has already begun and it feels maaa-velous!

Thanks to those of you who participated in my drawing for 2 free readings! I’ll announce the lucky winners sometime this weekend on my facebook page and am already looking forward to the readings. :-D

As to my regular (lately) Friday posts for Sonia Choquette’s weekly classes? Fugeddaboddit. Some of you said you wanted to do it with me online but with the exception of one (yes, one!) comment, I’ve not heard a peep. In fact, my blog has not been so quiet since I started it over a year ago, and I can only assume these class posts are a big, fat, flop.

So I’m discontinuing them. (Psst: I’m secretly glad because I really don’t want to have extra commitments over the holidays anyway. Down-time, ya know? I’m so ready.)

So, happy holidays to you, and I’ll see you in the new year.

Here’s wishing you many blessings in the meantime and after. Namasté.

I bet you’ve been more aware over this past week of the positive or negative quality of conversations you’ve been involved in.

I know I have. It’s been kind of fun to notice this again, and how easy it is to get “hijacked” like Sonia says.

[If you're just joining us, some of us are working Sonia Choquette's free on-line course together here, week by week. You're welcome to jump in any time!]

As the week went on, I was reminded that it’s not just conversations I’m in where the tone can be predominantly positive or negative, but lots of other venues can influence us, with or without our conscious awareness.

Ultimately, it’s up to us to maintain our own “space”. Why let filth and pollution blow in from everywhere?

Here’s just a short list of a few influences to pay attention to in this regard:

  • Conversations you overhear
And the “vibes” of the people involved.
  • T.V.
Especially news, but commercials are terrible at sparking fear. Lots of shows have drama galore and all kinds of “unenlightened” attitudes running amok. This can affect you whether you’re watching T.V. yourself or whether it’s just on in the background and you’re not paying attention.
  • Reading materials.
News especially, but even certain novels can seep negativity into you. As with T.V., the ads can dig into all of your insecurities with sharp precision.
  • Songs you listen to.
Especially “love songs” can be real bummers!
  • Internet “talk”.
And again, ads are everywhere, reminding you of your deficiencies. Do you even notice?
  • Text messages & emails
  • The thoughts in your own head.
These can sometimes be the scariest of all!

Do you have anything to add to this list? Did you benefit from paying attention to this idea this week, and how?

Thanks for participating!

Note: This is part B of Week 3. You can find part A here.

Ready for Week 4? Let’s get to it!

Are you so inspired you can hardly keep up with yourself? Or are you the type to investigate everything, analyzing the pros and cons? Maybe you react emotionally and intuitively to your world, or maybe a big priority is that things be practical and useful.

Whatever characteristic is prominent or whatever mixture you have of these qualities, thinking of them in terms of the 4 elements of fire, earth, air, and water can be eye-opening.

[If you're just joining us, some of us are working Sonia Choquette's free on-line course together here, week by week. You're welcome to jump in any time!]

The Four Elements in Your Birth Chart

As Sonia talked about the elements of earth, air, fire, and water as they relate to our spirits, I couldn’t help but relate that to jyotish (Vedic astrology) because our birth charts give us a direct picture of what Sonia calls our spirits.

Whatever element is predominant in our charts is indicative of our personalities, including our hidden and/or more subtle attributes that we aren’t necessarily aware of.

You (and your chart) may have a strong emphasis on one or two elements, or maybe a good balance of all of them. You likely have one element operating in one area of life, yet a different one in another area.

Your Rising Sign as Indicator

In jyotish, much depends on what was rising at the moment you were born. This is called your Ascendant, or Lagna.

You can use this calculator to find out what your Ascendant is. (Note, jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac so your rising sign is probably different than your rising sign in Western astrology).

And then, depending on what you find, here’s what element will be most reflected in your psyche:

Aries, Leo, Sagittarius: Fire (Vision)

  • Inspired
  • Live in future: mythological
  • Volatile, unpredictable
  • Intuitive
  • Mundane bores
  • Idealistic

Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn: Earth (Reality)

  • Practical
  • Sensual
  • Realistic
  • Pragmatic
  • At home with your body

Gemini, Libra, Aquarius: Air (Harmony)

  • Mental
  • Rely on reason, logic
  • Curious, interested
  • Intellectual and live in world of ideas
  • Communicator
  • Connector

Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces: Water (Fluidity)

  • Emotional
  • Move with instinct
  • Motivated by feeling
  • Relates to touch, feeling, images, symbols, color, music
  • Intuitive
  • Empathic

Of course, your whole chart (and what it represents) is more complex than just looking at your Ascendant but this can give an indication that’s pretty reliable in most cases.

Help With Decisions

Just like Sonia says, the more you know about your spirit (or your tendencies and aspirations as indicated by your chart), the more you’re able to make informed decisions and choices that will support you and your spirit.

I’d also recommend that you keep in mind that to everything there is a season, and what I’ve found in my life and what I know from being a jyotishi is that one element might predominate during one part of our life, yet another one later. Do you have a sense of that as you’ve changed and grown?

Any other comments about this week’s lesson?

Note: This week I did something slightly different and broke this into two separate articles. This first was about the lesson, the next will be about the practice. Even though Sonia created a bit of a bridge between the two, the lesson and the practice brought up two separate ideas for me. Stay tuned for part 2 in a few days.

Have you gotten a bit more in touch with your body this past week? I’m happy to report that I have, and my body and spirit are both delighted.

This is the end of Week 2 of the 10 week online course “The Answer is Simple”. Sonia’s topic this week was to  “Welcome Your Spirit” by loving your body as its sacred temple.

Did you?

(If you’re just joining us, the entire course is offered free by Sonia Choquette, and some of us are working it together here with a discussion at the end of each week. Join us!)

Love Your Body

Sonia reminded us to be attentive to our body, to embrace it, and to give it what it needs to thrive.

I took it as a reminder to be more conscious of both my body and my indwelling spirit. For me, being more attentive brought to mind all kinds of ideas and experiences I’d like to share. (But as I started to, I realized that each one is a post in itself. I don’t need to overwhelm you with it all right now. ;-) ) But ultimately, being reminded of all these things helped strengthen my conscious connection between body and spirit.

Her main point, I think, was to appreciate our bodies as the sacred vessels for our life force or spirit. She points out that it’s our body that gives us the ability to “think and choose and move and create”, and that it’s a gift. And she goes on to encourage us to respect and honor it, to love it unconditionally, and then, importantly, to express and act on that.

Your Body as a Manifestation of Spirit

As to the fact that we’re often critical of our bodies, she points out that your body is the perfect one for you, and that it’s a gift. I totally and completely agree. I mean, how blessed are we? Crazy blessed, I’d say!

Like last week, though — and for the sake of our discussion — I would put it a subtly different way.

My own intuitive sense is that your body is the main (although not only) point of manifestation for your being. This is slightly different than the temple idea in that your body doesn’t encompass your being like a temple, since your being is not confined to your body. More accurately, your body is the part of your beingness that is manifesting directly in this 3-D world.

So by necessity and by definition, your body exactly matches who you are in your essence. It’s merely the more dense part of that same pattern which is you.

Do you have any thoughts on this? Or what did this bring up for you this week?

Be Attentive to Your Body

Sonia’s recommendations for putting these ideas into practice this week were:

1. Pay attention to how your body responds to things, e.g. to thoughts, to sound (including how you speak of it). She gave a lot of examples of thanking it out loud.

2. Give it the basics (water, rest and what it needs to get this e.g. pillow, white noise, lotion, foot rub, etc.)

I’d been in the process of some major “maintenance” ;-) , i.e. dental work, routine checkups, therapy on my arm and shoulder (if you’re a blogger or writer, watch your ergonomics!), etc. and have been paying much attention to this area already.

It’s not so much that I’m communing with and loving it in a lovey-dovey way as I’m doing the practical things that it needs.

Still, it does appreciate it, I can tell. :-)

I also intend to keep a good bit of my time free over the holidays so I can tend to my health with some of the many effective holistic practices I enjoy.

3. Speak kindly to and about your body. It hears it. Spirit loves having a body.

Here it’s about loving your body unconditionally.

Sonia says that the more you love it, the more your body will become the body that you idealize. Hmmm, I’d not thought of it that way and haven’t experimented with this yet but I’m going to. Stay tuned for an updated, ravishing me!

She ends this suggestion by recommending you treat your body well and that if you do, you’ll attract all kinds of wonderful things.

4. Don’t let an hour go by that you don’t appreciate it or do something for it.

Wow. I tried this and it’s easy to forget. But it did help bring more body awareness and appreciation into my life this week, both welcome things!

Did you do any or all of these things? Or did you improvise some of your own? What were they and what did you find?

And now … On to week 3! See you again soon!

Did you catch a glimpse of your elusive spirit this week? The one that sometimes hides out when you’re looking the other way?

This is the end of Week 1 of the 10 week online course “The Answer is Simple”. And week 1 was precisely about how to recognize that spirit of yours!

(The entire course is offered free by Sonia Choquette, and some of us are working it together here with a discussion at the end of each week. Join us!)

This Week’s Concept

Here are a few notes I jotted down as I watched the first Week 1 video:

• Who you are is not your story, ego, history, accomplishments, family, personality, community, etc.

• You are a spirit. You are unlimited! All those other things have limits, but you don’t. So change your identity. Say I am a divine, glorious, unlimited spirit!

• Spirit has personality. There are different kinds of spirits, e.g. Sonia says she is fiery. Some are calm, soothing, grounded. What kind are you?

• The key is to know that you are divine.

• Recognize and enjoy spirit. It’s beautiful and perfect. It is so powerful it gives you life.

• We’re here to grow. Life is school.

• Understanding your spirit makes life and lessons easier to navigate. It makes ups and downs more pleasurable to engage in. You’re immune.

• Notice Spirit frequency vs. Ego frequency

• Ego is insecure, etc. When you’re in ego frequency, you feel separate and pull away. You’re fearful, judgemental, etc.

• Spirit frequency is always peace, love, etc. You want to connect and participate.

• Practice and concentrate on recognizing your spirit.

• What do you love? What do you enjoy? What leaves you feeling inspired? Notice how your energy opens up.

My Comments

OK, yes, I’m going to do it. I’m going to disagree with Sonia on a few nuances. :-)

1. I think our spirits are a part of us (a more subtle version of our physical bodies), but I don’t think we are our spirits.

I think that our essential nature is even more basic than our spirits.

She says our spirits are all different (i.e. hers is fiery, some are calm, etc.) and as I understand it, she is speaking of something that is manifesting at some level. If it weren’t it wouldn’t have characteristics, even subtle ones. (Then during the practice video, she says that our spirits are all the same spirit, which sounds a little like a contradiction to me. I do agree we are all one, but our spirits exist as subtle energy bodies and are not the same spirit any more than our left thumbs are the same thumb.)

I think that at our core, we are pure consciousness. That might not even be the right word for it, but it’s a beingness that doesn’t have any “qualities” that we can perceive. It doesn’t change at all that I can tell. It’s always the same.

And I said I “think” that, but I’ve come to that idea through experience. It’s not just something I read or heard.

The best I can do to describe what I’m talking about is to refer you to John Sherman’s conversations so you can see for yourself.

2. I’ve been playing with getting the word “unbound” (or something similar) into my tagline. I take all her talk about us being unlimited as an encouraging nudge.

3. Another slight disagreement. I used to agree that life is a school, but now I’m not so sure.

I think we’re here to simply participate and enjoy (I like the Sanskrit word “lila” for this, the divine play) even more than we are here to learn and grow. We automatically grow and evolve just by being.

4. I agree that at our core, we’re immune. I don’t know that I believe our “spirits” are totally immune. Our spirits are still energy patterns (albeit subtle ones) and still subject to impermanence. Our basic selves are not; they are — or it is — immortal.

So, all that said, sometimes I “look at me”, or sometimes to my spirit. It depends on the application.

What do you think about the concepts she talked about?

This Week’s Practice

Here are a few more notes I jotted down when I watched the second Week 1 video:

Breathing brings you into spirit frequency. When in ego, you hold your breath.

  1. Breathe
  2. Share a breath with several different people (or pets). There’s only one spirit. (Here’s where I saw that contradiction I mentioned above.)
  3. Notice how doing this lifts your vibration and opens your heart.
  4. Energize yourself with breath when you’re in ego.

My Experiences this Week

First, I did pay more attention than I would have if I were just doing this on my own, so thanks to all of you who jumped in to do this with me! :-D I do think I got more from it as a result.

I made it a point to revisit the idea that I am not this personality; I am much more essential and basic than that. And more than just revisiting an idea, I actually did more of the “Looking” this week.

Monday I found myself in a total funk. Total. Funk. (On Weds. before Thanksgiving I impulsively decided to take Monday off. Now I know why! I knew at a deeper level than my conscious mind did that I was going to need it!)

I felt really pissy but at some level was still compelled to examine what was going on. I also did some Emergence which included some Channeling about it, and the results of that session were marvelous. Within the next few hours I just kept feeling better and better.

I took some time to do the breathing like Sonia suggested. I did notice that when I was upset in some way, my breathing was shallow … and I was in ego frequency like she said. When I focused on my breathing, and on breathing deeply, I was able to easily get in touch with my spirit as she described it. It felt good.

Your Turn

What do you have to say about the concept? What were your experiences? Can you make any suggestions or have some ideas for others?

Anything goes!

Please feel free to reply to each other, and maybe we can get a discussion going. (If it’s especially substantial, I’ll make a post out of it.)

If you’re not working the course, you can still jump in with your thoughts. And next week you might want to join us!

Also, since this is the first week, I’m playing around with the format of this weekly discussion/report post. Fellow-ettes: Let me know if you want to see something different. ;-)

Thanks for joining in! :-D

And now: On to week 2! See you next Friday!

Quick note: Thanks to Lindsay at The Daily Awe, Lightspirited Being has been nominated as the “Best Personal Development Blog of 2011“!

I’d be thrilled to make it into the top 50 but can’t do it without you.

What do a breath-taking sunset, the smell of ocean fog and the feel of it on your face, the flavor of strong black tea on a chilly morning, and bright golden fall leaves back-lit by the sun all have in common?

Don’t they make you stop for a moment and beam inside? Make you feel like you could soar right out of your body?

Do they put you back in touch with who you are at your core? With spirit … and beauty … and joy?

Well, I’m going to be getting back in touch every week and I’d love it if you’d join me.

An Uplifting Opportunity

Sonia Choquette is an acclaimed psychic/intuitive whose how-to books and courses are straight-forward and practical, interesting and fun. She always speaks enthusiastically about being in touch with our own spirits, and speaking of that

Sonia just offered a generous Thanksgiving gift to everyone — free, no strings attached — of one of her online classes. It’s called The Answer is Simple.

It’s based on her NY Times bestselling book The Answer Is Simple… Love Yourself, Live Your Spirit, and Sonia says “It will allow you to make that connection to your authentic Spirit and experience your truth as it should be.”

Want to do it with me? (With us?)

It’s a 10-week course and each week consists of 2 short (~5 min.) videos; one is a lesson for the week, the second is a related practice.

You can easily integrate them into your life as you go though your week with no extra time required. (At least that’s my impression.)

I’m going to see what comes up each week and do a short post about it on Fridays.

And it would be fantastic if you did the same course week with me, then come over and join in the conversation.

Will you? Pretty-please? (With sugar on top?) It’s a unique opportunity to do it as a group since the course is available free to all of us. (Thanks to Sonia, of course, who supports and  encourages this, BTW.)

But mostly, it will be fun! And doing it together will multiply its effectiveness.

Now’s A Great Time

The holiday season is a perfect time to be in more constant, conscious touch with our spirits, don’t you think?

I do … so I started the course this morning.

It was lovely! (And that’s not even a word I use!) It set my day off just perfectly.

This coming Friday is the only Friday I’ll skip because we’re already well into this week (and a holiday week at that), and I want to give you time to hear about this and join us.

So I’ll write about Week 1 on next Friday the 2nd.

And I hope to see you back here then!

If you’re going to do it with us, will you leave a comment and let me/us know? And if not … well … I’ll miss you, but I hope you enjoy it if you do it on your own.

Or maybe you just need to check it out first. You can get it here. Oh, and Sonia invites you to share it with your friends too!

Best plan yet? Join me/us and share this post besides. It’ll be one big party!

[I dedicate this post and our certain enjoyment of the course to Sonia Choquette, for her generous and inspiring spirit. Thank you, Sonia!]

Namasté.

We’re about to experience an astrological event that just may shake us to our foundation.

This Weds., June 15, we have the 2nd eclipse of a 3 eclipse series where they all occur within one month of each other.

This one occurs at 4:12 PM EDT, and is a total lunar eclipse in Mula Nakshatra, at 0°22′ of sidereal Sagittarius.

If you look into the sky at Mula (it’s within Sagittarius but it’s the group of stars that represent the scorpion’s tail), you are gazing right into the center of our Milky Way galaxy.

A Sign of Dharma (Purpose)

Sagittarius is a fire sign, indicating inspiration (the root of this word is related to the word spirit, and/or breathing in) and as the 9th zodiac sign, it represents your dharma, or your spiritual drive to find your place or to live “on purpose”.

It’s actually a very auspicious sign, showing luck, grace, and opportunity.

But because eclipses show a disturbance or interference with whatever they touch, this means that for the next two weeks in particular you may notice a few hiccups in the area of your vocation or career — at least if those things represent what you feel is your purpose.

Even if you don’t see glitches occurring there, it’s not a good time to begin a new project related to that. I would wait until after the eclipse of July 1. The Moon will be waxing by then as well and when its light is increasing, that’s a better time for beginnings than when it’s waning.

An additional indication that this eclipse might be difficult is that this 0° of Sagittarius is what’s known as gandanta, a type of sandhi, or joint. It’s a junction between not only signs but Nakshatras as well, and between fire and water which we all know don’t mix. Junctures always indicate uncertaintly and discomfort.

From Material to Spiritual Gain

The Nakshatra this eclipse takes place in, Mula, adds a twist to this, however.

Mula is ruled by the Goddess Niritti (an ancient form of Kali), a goddess of death and destruction.

However, because Mula is ruled by an idealistic, very spiritual planet, what Niritti typically means as related to Mula is the destruction of our worldy or material desires. But because the motivation of Mula is kama (desire), it doesn’t so much indicate a lack of that as it does a spiritual or purposeful use of it.

Often, this is brought about by great pain, as our attachment to our lower nature and material tendencies is severed.

Mula means “root” and represents the Muladhara Chakra (Base or First Chakra), where the Kundalini power lies dormant, yet full of potential. We need this foundation to be healthy and our material needs to be taken care of, but then it is from here that we are initiated into our spiritual realization.

The roots are often depicted tied in a bunch, representing healing herbs, and this Nakshatra is very related to healing. I like to think of healing as “whole-ing” (since those words come from the same root word – and interesting we’re speaking again of roots).

So you are supported now in becoming more whole in all ways, even when there is no apparent wound or disease.

What this means, then, is that although this isn’t a good time to be looking to get results on the material plane, it’s an excellent time for looking within, especially with regard to your purpose, including how your purpose and earning (or wealth in general) relate to each other.

As to becoming whole, it’s about integrating all the various “parts” of you so that you operate in an integrated way (i.e. with integrity).

A Good Time to Look Inward

I’ve used a few good work/books that I can recommend and it’s a great time to start something like this.

1) Your Heart’s Desire: Instructions for Creating the Life You Really Want by Sonia Choquette (this is my favorite and I’ve bought several copies as gifts.)
2) The Millionairre Course: A Visionary Plan for Creating the Life of Your Dreams by Marc Allen (this sounds mercenary but it’s not — see question #4 below. I’ve also bought copies of this one as gifts.)
3) Finding Your Own North Star: Claiming the Life You Were Meant to Live by Martha Beck

If nothing else: Especially on the day of the eclipse–but also for the next two weeks–it’s an excellent time to do some soul-searching on this topic.

First, quiet your mind… Move into your heart…

And then ask your heart or spirit these questions:

  1. What do I love? Specifically what do I love to create?
  2. Do I get to do that on a regular basis?
  3. Are my regular activities and goals “should” goals or heart goals?
  4. How do I see the relationship between purpose, vocation, spirituality, and money?
  5. Is there a way I can incorporate what I love into what I do on a regular basis?

Another way I like to work with questions like this is to ask one, and then be willing to live in the question for awhile. Don’t insist on an answer right away. And then pay attention, because answers will begin to appear in your life. Something someone says… A song on the radio… Any kind of sign that has a certain meaning to you. This can be a fun yet powerful way to get some guidance and uncover parts of yourself that you’re not aware of right now.

During this period, a Bach Flower Remedy that can be helpful is Wild Oat. It helps you get in touch with your life purpose. It can help you connect with the over-arching purpose (if there is one), and/or the more immediate purpose your heart wants to be focusing on right now.

It’s also fair game during this period to examine other areas of your life that are related to your “roots”. This would include things like birth family, belief systems, financial security, etc.

And remember, if you’ve got your Ascendant or a planet at or very near this degree, take a look at what those indicate in your chart too, and pay special attention to that area for the next few weeks.

The World Stage

Eclipses have more of an effect on the world stage than on individuals, and usually for about 6 months.

This eclipse is not visible in the U.S. and so does not have as strong an effect here as where it is visible (Africa, the Middle East, and Australia).

But it’s interesting to me that there’s been a huge fire (over 600 square miles) raging out of control in Arizona, in the southwest United States. Not only is the eclipse in a fire sign, but the southwest direction is ruled by Rahu & Ketu, the planets (or more accurately, grahas or “seizers”) that cause eclipses.

To accurately see what effect this eclipse will have on this fire requires a study of the mundane or wordly effects, since planets, signs, and houses have special mundane indications. It would also require looking at other charts, such as that of the United States, of Arizona, perhaps the Arizona governor, etc. to be thorough.

I’m not a mundane astrologer and have not studied all these things, so take this with a grain of salt, but just at first glance? I wouldn’t expect a lot of good news related to this fire over the next two weeks.

If you want to watch the unfolding of the effects of this eclipse on the world, here are a few mundane indications you might pay attention to:

Sagittarius: Advisors to country rulers, foreign policy, ministers, military matters, commerce, travel industry, banks (including bankers and banking), published writings, judges, and religions.

Mula: International trade, cabinet officials, wealthy people, corporations, judges, leaders, soldiers, foreign exchange.

Two notable indications that are common between the two (and thus more likely to be affected) are military/soldiers and judges. I’ll be watching to see if an unusually difficult issue related to either of these hits the news over the next weeks or months.

Our 3rd and final eclipse of this series takes place on July 1. Please check back closer to that date for specifics. (Or better yet, subscribe and have the post delivered to your inbox.)
