Happy Holi!

This week marks a special Vedic holiday to welcome spring.

It’s Holi, the festival of color, and is a two-day event which includes fun and celebration.

It’s a popular holiday in India where people take to the streets with dancing, singing, and throwing of powder paint and colored water.

It coincides with the birthday of Lakshmi, the Goddess of abundance and prosperity.

Vedic holidays are synchronized with the position of the planets which give a precise idea of which energies are manifesting at any given moment.

And this holiday is celebrated as a time to welcome an abundance of all good things into your life.

It’s great if you can take advantage of the support for positive change that’s offered by these special days. Use them to magnify the helpful influences that support improvements in your life.

Holi and Lakshmi Jayanti – Growth & Abundance

Wednesday the 7th is Holika Dahana and holy ceremonies called pujas are performed to celebrate the victory of light over darkness, or good over evil.

Holi continues on Thursday, March 8th as a festival to celebrate new beginnings. It’s an especially good time to win the blessings of the Gods for good harvests and fertility of the land.

Thursday (the day of the full Moon) also happens to be Lakshmi Jayanti, the birthday celebration for Lakshmi, the beloved Goddess of wealth and abundance.

Auspicious Days for New Beginnings

These are very auspicious days for any type of activity including new beginnings.

That means anything you do or begin on these days will be especially blessed for success.

Activate Your Spring!

Speaking of spring and new beginnings …

Spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere on Tues. March 20, 2012, at 1:14 A.M. (EDT).

I will be welcoming it body and soul!

And would you like to have some new spring in your step?

NEW this year, I’m offering something to newsletter subscribers that I’m pretty jazzed about:

FREE!

Holographic Emergence

∞ Spring Activation ∞

It will act as a springboard for whatever intentions you hold during this fertile time of new beginnings.

We’ll do it as a group in a few weeks on a date TBD.

It will be sometime around the equinox and the lunar New Year (which occurs a few days after the equinox this year).

Details and registration information (it will be a teleconference) will be in the next newsletter. (Not on my newsletter list? You can sign up here.)

Many blessings to you during this sacred and powerful time, and best wishes for any new gifts you are opening to accept, or creations you are dreaming of and/or beginning to manifest!

Namasté.

Are you so inspired you can hardly keep up with yourself? Or are you the type to investigate everything, analyzing the pros and cons? Maybe you react emotionally and intuitively to your world, or maybe a big priority is that things be practical and useful.

Whatever characteristic is prominent or whatever mixture you have of these qualities, thinking of them in terms of the 4 elements of fire, earth, air, and water can be eye-opening.

[If you’re just joining us, some of us are working Sonia Choquette’s free on-line course together here, week by week. You’re welcome to jump in any time!]

The Four Elements in Your Birth Chart

As Sonia talked about the elements of earth, air, fire, and water as they relate to our spirits, I couldn’t help but relate that to jyotish (Vedic astrology) because our birth charts give us a direct picture of what Sonia calls our spirits.

Whatever element is predominant in our charts is indicative of our personalities, including our hidden and/or more subtle attributes that we aren’t necessarily aware of.

You (and your chart) may have a strong emphasis on one or two elements, or maybe a good balance of all of them. You likely have one element operating in one area of life, yet a different one in another area.

Your Rising Sign as Indicator

In jyotish, much depends on what was rising at the moment you were born. This is called your Ascendant, or Lagna.

You can use this calculator to find out what your Ascendant is. (Note, jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac so your rising sign is probably different than your rising sign in Western astrology).

And then, depending on what you find, here’s what element will be most reflected in your psyche:

Aries, Leo, Sagittarius: Fire (Vision)

  • Inspired
  • Live in future: mythological
  • Volatile, unpredictable
  • Intuitive
  • Mundane bores
  • Idealistic

Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn: Earth (Reality)

  • Practical
  • Sensual
  • Realistic
  • Pragmatic
  • At home with your body

Gemini, Libra, Aquarius: Air (Harmony)

  • Mental
  • Rely on reason, logic
  • Curious, interested
  • Intellectual and live in world of ideas
  • Communicator
  • Connector

Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces: Water (Fluidity)

  • Emotional
  • Move with instinct
  • Motivated by feeling
  • Relates to touch, feeling, images, symbols, color, music
  • Intuitive
  • Empathic

Of course, your whole chart (and what it represents) is more complex than just looking at your Ascendant but this can give an indication that’s pretty reliable in most cases.

Help With Decisions

Just like Sonia says, the more you know about your spirit (or your tendencies and aspirations as indicated by your chart), the more you’re able to make informed decisions and choices that will support you and your spirit.

I’d also recommend that you keep in mind that to everything there is a season, and what I’ve found in my life and what I know from being a jyotishi is that one element might predominate during one part of our life, yet another one later. Do you have a sense of that as you’ve changed and grown?

Any other comments about this week’s lesson?

Note: This week I did something slightly different and broke this into two separate articles. This first was about the lesson, the next will be about the practice. Even though Sonia created a bit of a bridge between the two, the lesson and the practice brought up two separate ideas for me. Stay tuned for part 2 in a few days.

Well, the Jyotish Tutorial series is getting off the ground and I’ve had a lot of interest from some of you who are brand new to Vedic astrology.

The thing is, though, that the tutorial series is for people who already know the basics.

Still, I’m hearing from beginners that you want to be able to participate in and learn from the tutorials right along with everyone else.

To that end, I decided to recommend some materials for you that can give you a jump start.

Books are not only informative but they’re an inexpensive way to get a taste of something and see if you want to pursue it more seriously.

So I thought a few book recommendations would be most helpful.

You really only need one of these, and no prior knowledge of astrology (East or West) is required!

Here we go.

Recommended Jyotish Books for Beginners

1) Beneath a Vedic Sky by William R. Levacy

If you want a book that gets right to the point, no muss no fuss, then this is it. It has the basics without a lot of verbiage around them. If you want to get the basics quickly, then I recommend this book.

2) Astrology of the Seers: A Guide to Vedic/Hindu Astrology by David Frawley

This is my all-time favorite and the book I started with (you should see my copy; well-used and well-loved). I still refer to it often, especially for remedial measures.

If you’ve ever read any of Dr. Frawley’s books or attended his workshops, you know he is not a surface guy. His products are packed with information. He gives you both depth and breadth and is extremely knowledgeable and a highly respected expert. (It was his correspondence course that I began my jyotish journey with, and I’m so glad. It’s excellent.)

This book would take more focus and time than #1, but it’s more comprehensive and has a lot more depth to it.

If you want to learn jyotish fairly thoroughly and get a real taste for it as the sacred art and science that it is, then this is the book I recommend the most.

3) Light on Life: An Introduction to the Astrology of India by Hart de Fouw and Dr. Robert Svoboda

I love this book. I didn’t use it to learn from initially but it seems to have all the basics. Like Dr. Frawley (#2), the authors give much voice to the deep philosophy behind jyotish, yet doesn’t neglect the basics.

There is a lot of information here that I’ve not seen elsewhere, and I highly recommend this book.

4) Vedic Astrology: A Guide to the Fundamentals of Jyotish by Ronnie Gale Dreyer

This book seems to have all the basics, and I own it, but I have to admit I never use it. But as I look through it I see that it has all the basics, so I think this book would do the trick to get you up and running fairly quickly.

5) Last but not least: Path of Light Volumes 1 & 2 by James Kelleher

In contrast to #4 which I own but don’t use, I don’t even own this set of books but I have no doubt it’s excellent.

James was my main teacher/tutor/mentor and I worked one-on-one with him every week for well over a year. As a result I’ve got a big fat binder and dozens of tapes (yes, tapes!) filled with much of the same information, otherwise you can bet I would have snatched these up in a heartbeat! (And probably will, some day. ;-))

James is a well-versed expert in traditional jyotish and a delightful story-teller. He spins yarns about the mythology on which much of the jyotish symbology is based, and shares illuminating stories of his work with clients and how their charts translate into real life. What he teaches is much enhanced by his extensive knowledge gained from working full time with clients for over 20 years and his attention to what really works and what doesn’t.

He’s also done something wonderfully original and that is to organize the material (in the 2nd book) according to the areas of life. Most jyotish books go by indicators such as signs, houses, planets, etc. But this book goes by life topics such as finances, relationships, career, etc. Life-centric instead of indicator-centric. It’s the first I’ve found that does this and that in itself makes it especially attractive and super useful.

On top of all of that, James is an excellent teacher (no matter what medium). He translates the astrological jargon into practical and easily understandable concepts and his love of and respect for jyotish are infectious.

Sight unseen, I recommend these 2 books; especially the first for beginners since it’s the more fundamental of the two.

When I started learning jyotish 15 years ago, there were few introductory books available and even those were hard to find.

Now, I notice that if you do an Amazon search on Vedic astrology over 500 books are listed and many of them are introductory and highly rated by readers. So do browse around, read reviews, and find what feels right to you. If you want to know if I’m familiar with any of them or their authors, just ask me in the comments below and I’ll share what I know.

So there you go.

If you’re a quick study, you can probably pick up enough basics that you can make use of the tutorial series.

In any case, I hope you enjoy the books, and with some luck, the tutorials too!

Namasté.

Or maybe you have your own recommendations for beginners? Please share them in the comments!

The purpose of Vedic astrology is not to make us feel subject to external forces but to help us use our life in a positive way for a greater Self-unfoldment.

– Dr. David Frawley, The Astrology of the Seers

The Sanskrit word for Vedic astrology is jyotish, which means “the science of light”.

It’s a perfect name for many reasons, including how well it illuminates our path and provides both inner and outer guidance.

As a jyotishi, I’m often asked what the difference is between Western astrology and jyotish. And when I did a guest post for Angela Artemis at her blog Powered by Intuition recently, she asked me to write about exactly that.

As I wrote, though, I became increasingly aware of just how many differences there actually are.

Way too many for one article!

In the end I decided that that article should just highlight a few of the main differences that even non-astrologers would care about, and that I would write this article too with even more differences, including those that astrologers might want to know about.

5 Main Differences

Briefly, the 5 main differences I covered in the Powered by Intuition post are:

1. The charts look different. I explain how and show you some examples.

2. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac whereas Western uses the tropical zodiac. I explain the zodiacs and why most peoples’ Sun sign shifts back one sign.

3. Jyotish is Moon based, and emphasizes the Ascendant and Moon more than the Sun. It relies on 27 smaller constellations called “Lunar Mansions” or nakshatras.

4. Jyotish is renowned for being predictive, and I discuss its brilliant timing system called dasas or planetary periods.

5. Jyotish offers built-in remedial measures called upayas that are used to help correct challenging situations and strengthen opportunities. I talk about this and what some of the upayas are.

Of course there’s more detail in that post so I encourage you to read it once you’ve finished this one. It has an especially good explanation of the two zodiacs.

18 More Big Differences

1. Precision

In jyotish, it’s important to know your birth time to the minute. That way, you can take advantage of its powerful and unique predictive features.

If you don’t, a jyotishi can do a complex and time-consuming process called rectification. This uses events in your life to “reverse-engineer” what your birth time must have been.

If you can’t get the time to the minute, then other systems of analysis can be used but they won’t give as detailed information.

2. Dasas (planetary periods) are nested

Nested Dasas (Barack Obama)

If your birth time is very precise, the dasa periods used for forecasting can be nested several levels deep to see progressively smaller time intervals.

This helps pin-point developments or events with levels of accuracy or detail that are sometimes downright startling.

3. Transits

Transits are used as a secondary indicator for timing. They’re done similarly to but differently than in Western astrology, with some special jyotish transits that are especially relevant and often indicate major life transitions.

4. Vargas

Precision is required not only to determine the dasa periods already mentioned, but also to calculate vargas (also called amsas or harmonic charts).

There are dozens of vargas that are calculated for various areas of your life, e.g relationship, money, career, children, parents, spirituality, etc. and they enable an in-depth view into areas of interest.

They’re also used to fine-tune and confirm indications that are observed in the birth chart itself.

These are very sensitive to even slight changes in birth time.

(Western astrology has added something like these relatively recently called harmonic charts, but they’re calculated differently and have not been there since the inception like these have.)

5. Navamsa, chart of the soul

The most important varga of all is the navamsa. It’s used as a secondary chart along with the birth chart for all aspects of life.

It’s also the all-important relationship chart.

It’s sometimes called the “chart of the soul” and it’s said that you progressively reflect your navamsa as you get older almost moreso than your birth chart. It shows the karma of your soul and what you long to realize at a deep level.

6. Jyotish has a spiritual essence

Born as it is, from the heart of the Vedas (the ancient Hindu scriptures), I would be remiss not to mention the profoundly spiritual essence of jyotish. It’s so much a part of this sacred art and science that I often forget that not all astrology is so integrated with a spiritual philosophy.

Combined with its remarkable predictive abilities, this is what makes jyotish such an outstanding tool for both inner and outer guidance.

Astrology, properly employed, shows us the world within us and our self within the entire world so that we might understand the unity of all creation.

– Dr. David Frawley, The Astrology of the Seers

Besides all this, jyotish itself is an ongoing sadhana (spiritual practice) for the jyotishi when approached correctly.

7. Varshaphal

A precise birth time also gives accurate varshaphal or annual charts.

Varshaphal charts are rich in information and enable the jyotishi to see in detail what’s likely to occur over the next year. They use yet another system of aspects (the Tajika system) and cycle through all the planetary periods in just one year. As in the other charts, the dasa periods are nested for detailed predictions.

8. Yogas

Yoga in this context means “combination” and planetary yogas play a major role in jyotish.

These are amazingly revealing indicators and can show opportunities and challenges in all areas of life, such as finances, vocation, relationships, etc.

There are hundreds of yogas with a dozen or so that are very important.

Just a few examples are:

  • Maha Purusa yogas or “great person” yogas. These are fairly rare and show extraordinary qualities.
  • Raja yogas show success. They indicate areas where you will be both capable and fulfilled. These are used a lot for career-related analysis.
  • Dhana yogas show wealth and its surrounding circumstances.
  • Kuja Dosa can show difficulties in relationship.

9. Karakas

Just as jyotish has yogas, it also has karakas or indicators. They can show certain people, areas of life, attributes, qualities, difficulties, opportunities, etc.

There are several sets that are calculated differently. Some are related to yogas, some to house rulership, some to planetary position, etc.

These are used extensively and are very illuminating.

10. Nakshatras

It would be impossible to over-emphasize the importance of nakshatras in jyotish. They are rich in symbolism and are used extensively in all aspects of analysis.

Of special importance is the Moon’s nakshatra at the time of birth. In fact, in India, if you asked someone their sign, they would answer with the sidereal nakshatra of their Moon, not the tropical sign of their Sun.

11. Bhavat Bhavam (referred houses)

Bhavat Bhavam (referred houses) means “from house to house” and is a special jyotish technique for seeing indications for all areas of life and even for people you have a relationship with (such as spouse, children, parents, employees, employer, etc.)

It’s one of the features of jyotish that give additional information and/or help confirm what’s seen elsewhere (also known as confluence) which is what makes jyotish so accurate when done properly.

It’s also great for checking on others whose charts aren’t available. For example, you can get an idea of the health of your mother, the personality of your children, etc. even without their charts.

12. Prasna Shastra & Nimitta

Prasna Shastra (sometimes called horary astrology) is an integral part of jytoish and is a handy way to answer any one question.

At the moment the question is asked of the jyotishi, that question is “born” and a chart is drawn up for that moment.

Prasna incorporates nimitta or the reading of omens that’s done hand in hand with the prasna chart (or sometimes even in place of the chart).

Jyotish also defines alternate ways to calculate a prasna chart when exact planetary positions or ascendant degrees are unknown (such as when no computer or ephemeris is available).

Like varshaphal, this type of chart uses special techniques that differ from how a normal birth chart is analyzed.

These charts are handy when you need to make a decision and they provide an amazing amount of accurate and helpful information.

For Astrologers: Differences in Analysis

13. Boundaries

Jyotish typically uses the sign boundaries as house boundaries, unlike Western astrology where they’re staggered.

14. Aspects

Aspects work differently. Some planets have special aspects, and planets aspect whole houses rather than other planets to the degree.

Aspects aren’t drawn on the charts like in Western astrology.

15. 7 planets

Jyotish traditionally uses only 7 of the planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn, ordered by the days of the week they rule. They act as a complete system and no others are necessary.

Along with the jyotishi’s judgement, planetary strength is calculated numerically using several different systems.

Some jyotishis use Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto but usually just for Mundane (worldly) predictions.

16. Rahu & Ketu

Jyotish also uses Rahu and Ketu as important planets.

They have significantly different meanings than in Western astrology where they are known as the north and south nodes of the Moon.

17. House, Sign, and Planet meanings

Most of the houses, signs, and planets have similar meanings as Western but there are differences, some more significant than others.

18. Additional Relationship Indicators

Relationship compatibility is highly important in jyotish and besides methods that are also used in Western astrology, jyotish includes several specific tools (such as relationship kutas) for analyzing partnerships.

A Stellar Combination

We’ve reached the end of our highlights for today. Whew!

Even with all this, we’ve barely begun noting the unique characteristics of this remarkable system.

Jyotish is very complex but the overlapping tools and systems-within-systems make it possible to fine-tune and confirm indications.

When these are properly analyzed and cross-checked, jyotish can give a high level of accuracy and reliability.

Are you familiar with the basics of how to interpret a Jyotish (Vedic Astrology) birth chart but want to know more?

And would you like to learn from someone who’s been trained and certified by some of the best Vedic Astrologers in the world, and who has a proven track record?

You’re in luck!

I was invited by Pundit Mahesh Shastriji to write some Jyotish lessons for his website My Panchang.

As a result, I’m excited to announce a new tutorial series I’ll be presenting there.

And it’s offered to you completely free!

It’s designed for intermediate level students and each sub-series will focus on one life area.

Financial Jyotish

The first sub-series is about how to see financial indications of all kinds in an individual’s Jyotish chart.

You’ll learn:

  • What the financial indicators are in an individual’s chart
  • How to interpret and translate them into meaningful and useful information
  • How to spot both opportunities and challenges
  • How to take best advantage of both

And the first article is already posted.

It introduces the series and includes an outline of the lessons I intend to present, as well as what I don’t plan to cover.

On my site, I have a corresponding Jyotish Tutorials page which you can get to from my main menu. It’s for comments and questions (since My Panchang has no way for us to interact) and it will also link to each of my articles at My Panchang for your convenience.

So again,

This is where you find the lessons, and

This is where you can interact with me about them.

I hope that’s not too confusing but I wanted us to be able to have discussions and I think this will work well once you get the hang of it.

I’m still soliciting your input on which lessons I’ll cover so please look over the outline in the first article and let me know what you think here, pro or con.

And then I hope you’ll join us for some beneficial lessons and (I hope) enthusiastic discussion.

Note: Pandit Shastriji knew of me because I often visit My Panchang, and I had linked to it from my post about the importance of your Lunar Mansion. My Panchang is an excellent resource for everything related to Panchang (various calendars and their use), including Hindu holidays and festivals and on which dates those auspicious days fall in timezones around the world.

Please share this post with your friends who might be interested. (There’s a convenient set of sharing options right below this paragraph. You can tweet, like or share on facebook, or email.) Thank you, and namasté!

On July 1 (this Friday), at 4:38 AM EDT, we have the last eclipse in a series of 3 that have taken place over just this past month.

This one’s a partial solar eclipse and it takes place in Ardra Nakshatra, at 15°16′ Gemini.

The first thing this says to me is that maybe we’ll get rain!

Wordly Affairs

This eclipse is in a nakshatra that’s related to rain and storms, and that makes me hopeful.

Our last eclipse took place in a fire sign, and with the Moon being eclipsed by Rahu (whose direction is south-west), I commented on the fires in the south-western U.S. They continue to break records both in number and size.

Some good news about rain would be more than welcome.

But in reality, this one probably won’t have much impact on wordly affairs at all.

Eclipses have their strongest effect where they’re visible, and according to the NASA Eclipse Website, “This Southern Hemisphere event is visible from a D-shaped region in the Antarctic Ocean south of Africa. Such a remote and isolated path means that it may very well turn out to be the solar eclipse that nobody sees.”

Ardra and the Great Power of Storm Energy

But as individuals, we can still work in harmony with the general energies of the eclipse by looking at Ardra nakshatra where the eclipse takes place.

The symbol of Ardra is a teardrop or raindrop, and it’s ruled by the wild and thunderous storm god Rudra who is a form of Shiva the Destroyer. And just like thunder can physically shake your world, the power of Rudra can shake you to your core emotionally.

And although this star represents the ferocity and power of the “storm” itself, it also relates to the aftermath.

It represents the sense of cleansing and renewal that we experience after a good cry, or that the environment benefits from after a good rain-storm.

Of course, to get there from here, we need to go through the turbulence of the storm or the cry, either literally or figuratively.

So beginning this Friday and for the next few weeks, you may notice this idea playing out in your life in one way or another. And if not for you specifically, then maybe with someone you’re close to.

In the Eye of the Storm

If and when an emotional storm presents itself, it can be powerful to allow yourself to just be in the midst of it.

  1. As soon as possible, get away to a quiet place where you can be alone. (Noisy and crowded can work too, if you can be focused.)
  2. Give your emotions permission to express themselves to you with as much freedom as you dare — just like the wild animals that Rudra also rules.
  3. Now allow them to move through you deeply and passionately.
  4. As they continue to touch you, observe them. Watch. Listen. Sense. Intuit.
  5. What are they telling you?
  6. If it’s not obvious, you can probe by asking them what part of you they’re trying to protect. Do you feel threatened? Do they indicate something you want? A pent-up passion? An unexpressed way in which you want to shine your light? A frustration? (You’ll know better than I do what questions are most helpful.)
  7. Feel the message in your heart. (Don’t get too mental because that will cut you off from the message-carrying emotion). Stay with it if you can, as several revelations will likely be forthcoming once you’re in this open heart space.
  8. Acknowledge the message and thank yourself for revealing it and for paying it attention.

The Rainbow After the Storm

If you’re willing to be in the storm instead of avoid it, you’ll find there are many rewards, including:

  • You’ll be in tune with your spirit. Almost always, your emotions are telling you something you’re not aware of yet so that you can process it and move forward more integrated with all levels of your being.
  • You’ll know your next steps. Guidance is often revealed along with the messages during the listening process. You just know what you have to do.
  • Things are suddenly clear. Sometimes the sense of clarity you gain is nothing short of astonishing. What was muddled and hazy before is now crystal clear.

Appreciate that all of these rewards are a direct result of the storm — or more accurately, of your courage and willingness to step into the eye of it.

So pat yourself on the back — you deserve it.

A Good Time to Apply Yourself

Each nakshatra has a particular shakti, or power, and that of Ardra is yatna shakti, or effort — especially effort for making gains in life.

This can give a great enthusiasm for making strides in whatever you are working on right now. This would include progress in any emotional work like I just mentioned in the previous section.

So over the next few weeks, if you’re willing to hold a persistent focus and make a determined effort, the rewards can be significant.

Do you have trouble finishing things? Or maybe that trips you up and you don’t even know it.

For awhile now I’ve struggled with how to be more productive.

I’m “very busy all the time” (inside joke with you-know-who-you-are) but I don’t seem to get much done.

Well, I’ve realized that’s exactly the key idea: Get things done.

I get lots of projects to about 80% and then they languish as I jump to something else.

It’s a real problem!

But I’m onto something. I just know I’m on my way, I can feel it in my bones.

Here are a few things that helped me get my head around it. And if you’re reading this, you’ll know it works, because it means I finished this post. Hooray!

Not Finishing Sucks

When you don’t finish things, you’re not nearly as productive as you deserve to be considering how hard you work. All your efforts go to waste.

Not finishing things is a total time and energy suck, and in other ways too.

Things lay around and languish. They wither. They die. Pretty soon they become downright toxic. This not only sucks, it stinks.

Also, being in the middle of a lot of unfinished things weighs you down. It takes effort to carry them around with you. They’re in your energy field, whether you’re aware of them or not.

Lots of you are intuitives or are interested in improving your abilities. As an intuitive you really want to keep things alive and moving. Clean. Fresh. Clear. Sattwic. This is true internally and externally. Being in the middle of a lot of unfinished things is the opposite of that. It’s heavy and oppressive. Tamasic.

And not ever getting any payoff for your efforts is just downright depressing. Yes, even if you love the process. If you never get that extra little satisfaction of a job well done, you’ll be dragged down and probably discouraged sooner or later. It’s like running and running without ever getting to stop.

Finishing Provides a Wonderful Buzz

Literally, when you finish something, you can feel the freed-up energy buzzing around wondering what to do with itself.

It’s kind of like after a good run. If you just *stop*, you feel the blood gather in your legs because it’s still raring to go. It’s on a roll. It’s got momentum. It’s ready! Available for some more action. And let’s not forget the euphoria of a runner’s high.

Accomplishing something just feels really good in and of itself.

And if what you’ve just finished serves a purpose (which probably it does), you and possibly others get the benefit of whatever that project was intended for besides.

Big wins all around.

Now’s a Good Time to Finish

Today is the Summer Solstice where I live, and that’s what prompted this post.

In my last newsletter I mentioned briefly that today begins what’s known in jyotish as Dakshinayana, where darkness increases as the days begin to shorten, and it’s time to finish what was begun in the brightening part of the year.

It’s the Solar version of the waning part of a monthly Lunar cycle, and it lasts half a year.

Just like a gardener worth their salt wouldn’t plant seeds while the moon is waning, this isn’t the best half of the year to be starting new projects.

(Of course this is only true in the Northern hemisphere. You guys in the south, go get crackin’ on some new stuff and don’t waste your time reading this post… for 6 more months, anyway. ;-))

If you pay attention you’ll notice that this feels natural. Right around New Year’s it’s easy to be enthused about starting new habits, new projects… same with spring. There’s a sense of newness in the air.

But now that summer is here, things are just kind of perking along. It’s not only a good time to be in maintenance mode but even better to work toward completion. Wrap it up.

And especially as we move toward fall, we will see things fall away, die off, get moved to the compost pile for new growth in the spring again.

6 months! This is a good chunk of time. You can finish up something substantial. Several things. Lots of things. Make a big difference. Free up lots of energy.

It’s kind of exciting!

Don’t Forget the Joy

Of course, finishing in and of itself isn’t the whole equation. Sometimes finishing things leaves you exhausted and depleted.

It’s important to notice that the things worth finishing (or maintaining/improving) are those things that bring joy to your heart.

That’s the sign you’re looking for. Those things will typically leave you feeling uplifted and sometimes even energized afterward. Needing some down-time is normal but it will feel healthy and balanced. You’ll feel satisfied and content.

If it doesn’t bring joy but it “needs” to be done, see if you can bring joy to the activity.

If you’ve made a commitment but don’t enjoy the activity, maybe you can find an aspect of it to enjoy, even if it’s the aspect of being honorable about it.

And if you can’t, maybe the way to finish it is to let it go. Redefine finished. Quit. Yes, quit it!

Only do it if it’s fun. If it’s not fun, make it fun. If you can’t make it fun, then don’t do it.
Peter Russell, physicist/philosopher as quoted in Danielle LaPorte’s Spark KIT

So do allow yourself to “finish up” or let go of whatever doesn’t serve your spirit. That alone will be a big weight off and free your energy for where it can be put to its best use.

What to Finish?

(I know, right about now you just want to finish this damn post, already. I hear ya. Me too. But I decided to enjoy slogging on. Really! Are we having fun yet?)

We’ve been talking about projects so far, but this idea goes for all kinds of things.

Start by doing a physical (you and your environment), mental, and emotional inventory. For the sake of brevity (catch the levity?), here are just a few things to look for:

Any kind of unfinished business. This could be relationships that are just kind of hanging in your life and not serving anyone, intentions you have but haven’t acted on, lists you’ve had going for years with a little bit done on each item, etc.

Anything on a list even if you haven’t started it; you’ve still got a piece of yourself invested in it.

Decisions that you need to make but haven’t, maybe because you’re afraid to lose some potential. Just do it. Make a choice. Decide.

The word “decide” comes from the Latin decidere, to cut off. This is what you are doing when you decide, cutting away an option. So it’s true that energetically (and in other ways), you are closing a door. But that’s good. It often takes closing the old one for a new one to open.

Things around the house that you’ve started with the intention of doing some day — but haven’t.

Old stories that you can benefit from letting go of.

Old belief patterns, especially negative and limiting thoughts.

Too many commitments.

Judgements about situations, others and ourselves. Often based on old stuff. Often sub-conscious.

Projections, especially paranoid ones that you let limit you. Often just under the surface.

Resentments. This can be quite the project, but well worth it. Often we’re very aware of these but don’t want to take the time to clean them up.

Negative associations (e.g. friendships or group activities that you down or just don’t work anymore.)

There are some patterns to watch for that one post just can’t do justice. There are books written on each of these. But just for the record, a few other things that are huge time and energy drains are:

Clutter. Any kind of clutter qualifies (I love the book Clear Your Clutter With Feng Shui by Karen Kingston. So practically helpful and inspiring. Gets you excited and off your butt.)

But especially clear out anything that feels bad. So, anything that brings up bad memories, even subtly, when you notice it. Or things that make you feel guilty because you’re neglecting them, things you don’t like, etc.

And don’t just put it away in a closet or garage. Get rid of it. Pass it on if you can to someone who will cherish or use it. Energetically, this creates space. The space itself feels great.

But watch out, the space may fill up fast. But please, not with new clutter! Let it be with something that supports your new interests in a positive way.

Being and staying stuck.

Bad habits.

Disorganization.

Allowing and even encouraging distractions.

Plus: Little Changes with Big Payoffs

Expunge the habit of not finishing. Yes, this can be a habit.

Even with little things, like opening the mail and setting it down, setting dirty dishes in the sink, tossing your clothes on the bed, etc. I heard once that it’s good to handle everything only once. This doesn’t always make sense but in this case it’s a helpful thought to keep in mind and practice often.

It’s a little along the lines of finishing one thing before beginning another, but not exactly.

Let go of perfectionism. This can be a biggie.

Haven’t we all been in that exhausting place where things have to be so perfect they’re never good enough to be done?

I know that for me, I have to let go of the idea that my posts have to be thorough and painfully organized. Writing a post often becomes a huge, sprawling, monster of a project (like this one) that I never finish (but will this time). And then I wonder why I have dozens of almost-finished posts laying around.

It’s time to learn to do a decently good job and call it done. It’s either that or nothing. Really!

Something’s got to change.

Slowly but surely, we can let go of some old rules.

So Now What?

I read an excellent post last week on write to done by Ali Luke of Aliventures. It’s called How to Finish What You Start: A Five-Step Plan for Writers and is about writing but could actually be applied to anything.

Her 5 steps are:

  1. Stop starting new projects
  2. Assess your current projects
  3. Choose one project to focus on
  4. Decide what “finished” will look like
  5. Set some milestones (and start hitting them)

There are a lot of helpful ideas in it, and you really should check it out.

Here are a few things I would add or emphasize, and where I would fit them in:

Before #1) Be motivated to finish.

Do this by knowing and acknowledging that finishing makes all the difference. Doing that last little bit gives you a lot of bang for your buck. It’s a “duh”, I know, but being conscious of this as something to make sure I do with every activity is critical in making this change.

Between #3 & #4) Consider why you avoid finishing each thing.

Sometimes we kid ourselves. We don’t realize we’re quitting; we think we’re setting something aside for now but then we never get back to it.

But why do you resist finishing it?

Acknowledge there may be (and probably is) some block you have about it, or that it is making you face. Looking at it will help you move through it to a new freedom on the other side.

See if you can NOT ignore, avoid, or try to get rid of your blocks. Instead, greet them, acknowledge them, embrace them, and most importantly: see or listen to what they have to say to you.

Whenever you do this, they’ll lose their substance as they transform into a gift that you then carry forward, walking right through where they used to be with your eyes wide open, and all the better for it.

For example, with my posts, I realize that every time I get a good way through I let my inner critic sabotage me. I can always find something wrong with what I’ve written. If I look at this consciously, I stand to gain much more than if I repeatedly bulldoze my way through them.

This way you grow instead of struggle.

Between #4 & #5) Dangle a carrot.

Keep in front of yourself not only the finished product and the benefits of it to you and others, but also how you’re going to feel when you’re finished.

Of course you’ll get/feel the benefit from whatever you finish, but you’ll also feel great just knowing you completed it. If you’re like me, that’s a big deal too!

And don’t forget, even if you’ve just launched something and you’ve yet to see how well it will do (this babe out in the world), it’s a milestone. Let yourself celebrate your milestones.

Are You With Me?

Just like how —  at the beginning of this year — I jumped on the “one word” bandwagon (and I even still know what my word is, do you know yours?), I am committing right now that for the next 6 months I will keep this word in front of me:

Finish

Do you want to do this with me? We all know that support can help a lot, right?

If you want to join me, say so in the comments.

And if we get a decent number of us, we’ll come up with a Twitter hashtag and keep in touch there. Sound good?

[Thank you for sticking with me through this ridiculously long post. My longest yet, but there was no way I could NOT finish it, you know that, right? 😉 (But just think how good I must feel!)]

We’re about to experience an astrological event that just may shake us to our foundation.

This Weds., June 15, we have the 2nd eclipse of a 3 eclipse series where they all occur within one month of each other.

This one occurs at 4:12 PM EDT, and is a total lunar eclipse in Mula Nakshatra, at 0°22′ of sidereal Sagittarius.

If you look into the sky at Mula (it’s within Sagittarius but it’s the group of stars that represent the scorpion’s tail), you are gazing right into the center of our Milky Way galaxy.

A Sign of Dharma (Purpose)

Sagittarius is a fire sign, indicating inspiration (the root of this word is related to the word spirit, and/or breathing in) and as the 9th zodiac sign, it represents your dharma, or your spiritual drive to find your place or to live “on purpose”.

It’s actually a very auspicious sign, showing luck, grace, and opportunity.

But because eclipses show a disturbance or interference with whatever they touch, this means that for the next two weeks in particular you may notice a few hiccups in the area of your vocation or career — at least if those things represent what you feel is your purpose.

Even if you don’t see glitches occurring there, it’s not a good time to begin a new project related to that. I would wait until after the eclipse of July 1. The Moon will be waxing by then as well and when its light is increasing, that’s a better time for beginnings than when it’s waning.

An additional indication that this eclipse might be difficult is that this 0° of Sagittarius is what’s known as gandanta, a type of sandhi, or joint. It’s a junction between not only signs but Nakshatras as well, and between fire and water which we all know don’t mix. Junctures always indicate uncertaintly and discomfort.

From Material to Spiritual Gain

The Nakshatra this eclipse takes place in, Mula, adds a twist to this, however.

Mula is ruled by the Goddess Niritti (an ancient form of Kali), a goddess of death and destruction.

However, because Mula is ruled by an idealistic, very spiritual planet, what Niritti typically means as related to Mula is the destruction of our worldy or material desires. But because the motivation of Mula is kama (desire), it doesn’t so much indicate a lack of that as it does a spiritual or purposeful use of it.

Often, this is brought about by great pain, as our attachment to our lower nature and material tendencies is severed.

Mula means “root” and represents the Muladhara Chakra (Base or First Chakra), where the Kundalini power lies dormant, yet full of potential. We need this foundation to be healthy and our material needs to be taken care of, but then it is from here that we are initiated into our spiritual realization.

The roots are often depicted tied in a bunch, representing healing herbs, and this Nakshatra is very related to healing. I like to think of healing as “whole-ing” (since those words come from the same root word – and interesting we’re speaking again of roots).

So you are supported now in becoming more whole in all ways, even when there is no apparent wound or disease.

What this means, then, is that although this isn’t a good time to be looking to get results on the material plane, it’s an excellent time for looking within, especially with regard to your purpose, including how your purpose and earning (or wealth in general) relate to each other.

As to becoming whole, it’s about integrating all the various “parts” of you so that you operate in an integrated way (i.e. with integrity).

A Good Time to Look Inward

I’ve used a few good work/books that I can recommend and it’s a great time to start something like this.

1) Your Heart’s Desire: Instructions for Creating the Life You Really Want by Sonia Choquette (this is my favorite and I’ve bought several copies as gifts.)
2) The Millionairre Course: A Visionary Plan for Creating the Life of Your Dreams by Marc Allen (this sounds mercenary but it’s not — see question #4 below. I’ve also bought copies of this one as gifts.)
3) Finding Your Own North Star: Claiming the Life You Were Meant to Live by Martha Beck

If nothing else: Especially on the day of the eclipse–but also for the next two weeks–it’s an excellent time to do some soul-searching on this topic.

First, quiet your mind… Move into your heart…

And then ask your heart or spirit these questions:

  1. What do I love? Specifically what do I love to create?
  2. Do I get to do that on a regular basis?
  3. Are my regular activities and goals “should” goals or heart goals?
  4. How do I see the relationship between purpose, vocation, spirituality, and money?
  5. Is there a way I can incorporate what I love into what I do on a regular basis?

Another way I like to work with questions like this is to ask one, and then be willing to live in the question for awhile. Don’t insist on an answer right away. And then pay attention, because answers will begin to appear in your life. Something someone says… A song on the radio… Any kind of sign that has a certain meaning to you. This can be a fun yet powerful way to get some guidance and uncover parts of yourself that you’re not aware of right now.

During this period, a Bach Flower Remedy that can be helpful is Wild Oat. It helps you get in touch with your life purpose. It can help you connect with the over-arching purpose (if there is one), and/or the more immediate purpose your heart wants to be focusing on right now.

It’s also fair game during this period to examine other areas of your life that are related to your “roots”. This would include things like birth family, belief systems, financial security, etc.

And remember, if you’ve got your Ascendant or a planet at or very near this degree, take a look at what those indicate in your chart too, and pay special attention to that area for the next few weeks.

The World Stage

Eclipses have more of an effect on the world stage than on individuals, and usually for about 6 months.

This eclipse is not visible in the U.S. and so does not have as strong an effect here as where it is visible (Africa, the Middle East, and Australia).

But it’s interesting to me that there’s been a huge fire (over 600 square miles) raging out of control in Arizona, in the southwest United States. Not only is the eclipse in a fire sign, but the southwest direction is ruled by Rahu & Ketu, the planets (or more accurately, grahas or “seizers”) that cause eclipses.

To accurately see what effect this eclipse will have on this fire requires a study of the mundane or wordly effects, since planets, signs, and houses have special mundane indications. It would also require looking at other charts, such as that of the United States, of Arizona, perhaps the Arizona governor, etc. to be thorough.

I’m not a mundane astrologer and have not studied all these things, so take this with a grain of salt, but just at first glance? I wouldn’t expect a lot of good news related to this fire over the next two weeks.

If you want to watch the unfolding of the effects of this eclipse on the world, here are a few mundane indications you might pay attention to:

Sagittarius: Advisors to country rulers, foreign policy, ministers, military matters, commerce, travel industry, banks (including bankers and banking), published writings, judges, and religions.

Mula: International trade, cabinet officials, wealthy people, corporations, judges, leaders, soldiers, foreign exchange.

Two notable indications that are common between the two (and thus more likely to be affected) are military/soldiers and judges. I’ll be watching to see if an unusually difficult issue related to either of these hits the news over the next weeks or months.

Our 3rd and final eclipse of this series takes place on July 1. Please check back closer to that date for specifics. (Or better yet, subscribe and have the post delivered to your inbox.)

Remember the saying “Knowledge is power“? Well, that goes doubly for eclipse energy.

Not only are there life areas that are supported (as usual), but also some that you want to keep an eye on for awhile.

Here is some knowledge about today’s eclipse that can help empower you to use it to your advantage.

Solar Eclipse in Rohini

Today, June 1, at 5:16 PM EDT, we have the first of 3 eclipses that all occur within one month of each other.

It’s a partial solar eclipse that takes place in Rohini Nakshatra, at 17°6′ of sidereal Taurus. (Wondering what a Nakshatra is? Take a look at this post and find out which one relates to you.)

Effects on Security & Growth

Taurus is an earth sign, and it represents our foundation and our security, including financial.

Rohini is marked by the bright red star Aldebaran that is the eye of the bull. Its shakti or power is that of growth.

Eclipses show where energy is being blocked, so an eclipse in this Nakshatra can show a stunting of or uncertainty about growth of all kinds, including areas related to our security.

You will likely see this play out on the world stage for the next 6 months (especially in areas where the eclipse is visible), perhaps with a continuation of the already slow economic growth. But because growth and earth are so interconnected here as well, I would expect to see some issues with crops too.

In your personal life, this will not have too much of an effect unless you’ve got your Ascendant (rising degree) or a planet at or very near the eclipse degree. If you do, indications are similar in that you will likely see a stunting of growth in the area(s) indicated by what that planet and house mean in your chart.

But in general, this can be a good time to evaluate what is thriving and what is languishing in your life. Are you putting your attention on what you want to grow? Now is a good time to turn away from or actively sever from your life those things that are not fruitful but are sapping your time or energy.

Effects on Diet & Romance

This applies to all areas, but in particular, look at the areas of diet and romance.

The grahas (planets) that cause eclipses are related to poison, dishonesty, and the like. So watch that these things don’t worm their way into your diet and romantic relationships in the next few weeks.

Rohini is related to growth (and agriculture/food), so evaluate if what you eat is actually wholesome for you and also if its production supports Mother Earth (and forms of life) or causes harm or imbalance. Let’s all take a little better care of Her and us right now.

Rohini is also an erotic maiden who invokes much jealousy from others.

Take a look at your romantic relationships and if there is anything unhealthy going on, this could be a good time to bring it to a close. This would include things like jealousies and over-indulgences, or relationships that are built on anything unethical, even if slight.

You will actually be supported in letting go of these things over the next 2 weeks especially and the next few months more generally.

Upcoming Lunar Eclipse

On June 15, we have the 2nd eclipse of this 3 eclipse series. Stay tuned for a post on that closer to that date.

In the meantime, see my previous post about working with eclipse energy as it applies to all eclipses. I continue to update that post as things occur to me.

The touch of an eclipse

Eclipses touch us.

Eclipses indicate periods of transition and change.

They primarily affect things at a worldly level but if you pay attention you’ll notice that they influence us at a personal level too.

Next week we’ll have the first of 3 eclipses that all occur within one month of each other. (June 1, June 15, July 1.)

According to jyotish, eclipses are events to be aware of because they tend to block energy rather than facilitate it, causing disruption rather than flow.

Knowing the specifics helps us act accordingly.

Here are some tips for making the most of eclipse periods.

On the Day of the Eclipse

The actual day of an eclipse is not a good day to initiate major events or plans.

However, it’s an especially powerful day for resting, quiet time, and for spiritual or inner focus. (Note that jyotish considers each day as going from sunrise to sunrise.)

It’s not uncommon that on the day of an eclipse, things get “eclipsed”. Letters or emails go missing, important phone calls don’t get returned, trips go awry, reservations get dropped; things like that. So either do these things on a different day or plan to do a bit of extra followup.

It’s not recommended to go outside to view an eclipse, especially if you’re pregnant.

On a Solar Eclipse

Consider that the Sun represents your self and how you shine in the world.

Because this light is blocked, it’s not a good day for trying to impress people or to strongly rely on your authority.

Instead, it’s a great day for inner and/or spiritual pursuits, especially those where you take some time out to investigate, recognize, and honor your own self and who or what you are.

On a Lunar Eclipse

It so happens that Rahu and Ketu, the grahas that cause eclipses, often cause confusion in whatever realm they influence.

The Moon represents your perceptive mind, your moods, emotions, and intuition. You may find that your intuitions or moods are disrupted or feel confusing to you.

It’s not a good day to be involved in things where you need to rely on your emotions or intuitions as part of major decisions.

You also may want to avoid situations where you need to be on an even keel or situations that are emotionally volatile.

But it is a good day to explore those things quite deeply, go deep and really feel, and it’s a good day for some deep meditation and quiet time.

The Time Between Eclipses

The time between eclipses is not a good time for beginning new ventures. If at all possible, launch that new project either before the first eclipse or after the last. (That means not during June this year.)

But it is an excellent time for finishing up old business, and completing those projects you’ve already begun. Cleaning up loose ends also includes things like cleaning house and letting go of old baggage of various kinds. Have any of that? 😉

The Time After an Eclipse

First, it’s interesting to watch world events as they unfold following a set of eclipses.

A rule of thumb is that their effects last about 6 months.

In December I noticed that the January eclipse was in a Nakshatra related to water and because there was another water-related conjunction going on indicating sudden events, I suggested there may be some difficult water-related catastrophes coming up. Sure enough, look at all the water-related disasters that have been going on (e.g. epic tsunami-related disasters in Japan, floods in Australia, and record flooding along the Mississippi in the U.S.)

So if you watch world events, you’ll notice they often reflect the eclipse indications in an obvious way.

And then, if you know your chart positions, you can see if your Ascendant or any planets are at the eclipse degree. If so, you’ll want to take special care in areas represented by that planet and its position for 2 weeks following that eclipse especially and for the next 6 months in general.

The Upcoming June/July Eclipses

Next week, I’ll give you some specifics about the 3 upcoming eclipses.

So if you want even more tips, please check back!

A yucca bud as it appeared on Akshaya Tritiya, 2010

Tomorrow (Thursday, May 5th) is a special Vedic holiday called Akshaya Tritiya.

It means “the never-diminishing” and is an especially auspicious day where whatever you begin or invest in will grow and prosper. (You can read more about it here.)

Unlike most Western holidays, those of the Vedas are synchronized with the rhythms of nature as reflected in the movement of planets through the zodiac.

That gives us a precise idea of the energies manifesting at any given moment.

Some energetic patterns are substantial enough that they call out for our attention, and these become the Vedic holy days, or holidays. Harmonizing with their energies can be beneficial to us.

When Akshaya Tritiya rolls around every year, it’s great to take advantage of the supportive energies to increase what you want to grow in your life.

How to Magnify the Energetic Support

From the moment you wake up, you can enjoy the benefits of applying this idea consciously with everything and anything in your life that you appreciate and/or want to grow.

Not only will you benefit from the actual increased growth of whatever it was, but you’ll likely be floating on air with the appreciation you feel as you recognize just how many things in your life fit into that category of things whose presence you want to flourish.

Look Toward the Light, Not the Shadows

Last year, on Akshaya Tritiya, I remember that not more than an hour into my day as I thought about all the things I wanted to do, I realized how stressed I was feeling.

That very same yucca bud only one day after Akshaya Tritiya

Did I want my stress to increase? No way!

So I considered what I did want: the feeling of knowing that I have the space in my day to accomplish whatever really needed to be accomplished, and more than that, the feeling of knowing that all is well in the meantime. And of enjoyment. Of that glorious day, after all!

And fortunately, I was able to flip right into that space and remain there the rest of the day. Whew, close call!

So, no matter how your day begins or what you’ve got going on, you can decide to set about attending to all those many wonderful things in your life that you appreciate and would like to see flourish.

You’ll notice that your day is full to overflowing with such things.

Initiate or Tend to What You Want to Increase

This is a day to take the first step on a project that you want to flourish or an activity that you want to turn out positively.

Take some time to focus on your spiritual practice to help strengthen and establish its presence in your life.

It’s also an especially great day to initiate improvements in anything related to finances or valuables.

As an example, here are a few things I reveled in (and jotted down) last year on this auspicious day:

  • I spent some special time with my husband. I even made it a point to listen a few times. 😉
  • I practiced “Looking at Myself” frequently all day long.
  • I took the dogs for a drive to a charming village nearby where I ran a few errands. It was bustling with the beginning of the summer tourist activity.
  • Then we went for a walk by the river where the dogs got to take a dip. Beautiful and refreshing.
  • I bought some lottery tickets. (In India it’s a day where people buy gold and jewels. That would work, too. ;-))
  • I did a Matrix Enegetics session for my almost-daughter-in-law and my soon-to-be-born grandbaby! (Who’s now a healthy almost-one-year-old.)
  • I returned a call to a client. Thank God for my wonderful clients and for the interesting work I get to do.
  • I watered my rhubarb. It’s the first year I can actually harvest it and I am excited!

This year I’m going to enjoy posting to my blog. In particular, I’m going to announce a new service I’m offering. Yippee!

I’m hoping that the magic of this special day will help me grow both of them.

Let Every Day Be Akshaya Tritiya

If you’re catching this post a little late and missed Akshaya Tritiya, well… Let today be Akshaya Tritiya for you. If you have any confidence at all in the Law of Attraction, you know that whatever you put your attention on grows.

Let your attention be on all the wonderful, positive things that you are grateful for today.

I hope you have a wonderful day, and I wish you abundance and prosperity!

Namasté.

My favorite nakshatra book by mythologist and jyotishi Kenneth Johnson

Have you ever met a sour-puss who has everything they could possibly want, but all they do is complain?

And then there’s that sweet person who has hardly anything, but is happy and grateful all the time?

Which one do you see in the mirror? Do you even know? Have a suspicion?

Just like in those examples, how you experience life and how happy you can be depends much more on how you subjectively perceive and interpret your life than on what the objective facts are.

Would you like some insight right now into your own subjective tendencies and attitudes?

It’s a great insight to have because knowledge is power.

Your Subjective Moon

In jyotish (Vedic astrology), it’s the Moon that relates to your perceptive mind and how you perceive your life. It shows how you experience or interpret your world at an emotional, intuitive, or instinctive level.

Because so much of your life experience hinges on these subjective perceptions, jyotish considers the Moon a pivotal planet of interest and gives it utmost importance.

The Revealing Lunar Mansions

Perhaps because of the all-important Moon, also of great importance are the Moon-related constellations known as the nakshatras, or lunar mansions. They’re called lunar mansions (or mansions of the Moon) because the Moon travels through approximately one per day.

There are 27 of these small constellations around the zodiac, superimposed on the 12 zodiac signs we all know and love. Just like each one of your planets is in a sign, they’re also in one of the lunar mansions.

Each lunar mansion has its own unique energies, is rich in mythology and symbolism, and gives much insight into any part of your life that it influences.

The Mansion of Your Moon

So if you want insight into how you perceive life and your aptitude for happiness, it’s fascinating and helpful to look at which lunar mansion your Moon was in when you were born.

If you’ve had a jyotish reading from me, I’m sure we discussed the implications of your Moon’s nakshatra at some length.

Your Vedic Chart – Free

But if you don’t know your Moon’s lunar mansion yet and want to do a quick investigation on your own right now, here’s how. Use this easy chart generator to enter your birth information and find out instantly exactly where all your planets were at the moment of your birth.

Jyotish is very exact so you need your birth time in addition to date and location. (But the software is friendly so at least you don’t need coordinates. It looks them up for you when you enter your city.)

Once you enter your birth information, it will return with your planetary positions in a table and as a chart. (Note that these are the sidereal positions used in jyotish, not the tropical positions used in Western astrology.)

In the first table, 3rd row down, you’ll see your Moon. The 3rd column over gives its nakshatra.

What Does Your Moon’s Mansion Tell You?

Once you have that, you can go to this great website and look up your Moon’s nakshatra.

You’ll be reading about you and how you perceive the world.

Much of this will be illuminating. It sheds light on your tendencies and inclinations as well as other areas of your psyche that you may not be consciously aware of.

Being more aware of these gives you insight and clarity so you can respond more consciously and make better decisions in all walks of life.

Your Moon Sheds Light But Is Not the Whole Story

It’s sometimes startling how well your Moon’s lunar mansion describes you. But remember, there are lots of other influences and they all intermingle. No one chart indicator can ever give you the whole picture.

Hopefully, you got some useful insights from the links I just gave you, but if you want even *more* insight and guidance, you can always get a full jyotish reading with me. I do hours-worth of analysis ahead of time so we only use your time discussing what’s relevant. Please contact me if you’re interested or have any questions.

Did you know you can use natural cycles to support improvements in your life?

To increase what you want and let go of what you don’t?

An accessible and  effective way to do this is to recognize the Vedic (Hindu) holidays to magnify helpful influences. It just takes some attention and conscious intent.

Unlike most Western holidays, those of the Vedas are synchronized with the rhythms of nature as reflected in the movement of planets through the zodiac.

The current position of the planets in the signs gives us a precise idea of the energies manifesting at any given moment. This is fine-tuned by using the Vedic nakshatras which are smaller constellations along the same ecliptic as the zodiac signs we are all familiar with.

Some energetic patterns are substantial enough that they call out for our attention, and these become the Vedic holy days, or holidays.

Harmonizing with their energies can be beneficial to us. In what way is dependent on which energy pattern or holiday is active.

Immediate Opportunities

Here are 2 upcoming Vedic holidays that we can take advantage of. (Dates shown are for Continental U.S.)

Maha Shivaratri is good for performing rituals that honor endings.

Holi is a day to celebrate abundance and is an auspicious for any kind of activity.

Maha Shivaratri – Endings

Maha Shivaratri is this Wednesday, March 2nd this year.

This is the night for worshipping Shiva, the lord of destruction. In India, devotees fast, chant the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya”, and make offerings. That night they keep long vigils, and listen to stories, hymns and songs.

Shiva is a part of the Hindu trinity and as the God of destruction, relates to Saturn (or Yama, the God of death).

It’s a good time for honoring your ancestors and acknowledging the gifts brought to your life by things that are no longer, things or people that you have grieved.

It’s an especially good time for practicing ritual related to anything in your life you would like to see destroyed/ended or to say goodbye to.

  • Do you have fears you’d like to let go of?
  • Habits to break?
  • Blockages you want to eliminate?
  • Unacceptance you would like to let go of so you can truly surrender to the dance of life?

This is a perfect time to perform a personalized ritual to consciously ask for Divine help in leaving these things behind.

Doing so can have powerful, positive effects at many levels.

Holi and Lakshmi Jayanti – Growth

Holi is on Saturday, March 19th this year.

In contrast to the dark night of honoring lord Shiva, the Spring Festival of Holi is a festival of colors to welcome the spring. It’s time to win the blessings of the Gods for good harvests and fertility of the land.

This also happens to be Lakshmi Jayanti, the birthday celebration for Lakshmi, the beloved Goddess of wealth and abundance.

This holiday is celebrated as a time to welcome an abundance of all good things into your life.

The day before is called Holika Dahana and holy ceremonies called pujas are performed to celebrate the victory of good over evil.

As with many of the Hindu holy days and festivals, Holi is an auspicious day for any type of activity including new beginnings.

Do yourself a favor and take advantage of the support for positive change that’s offered by these special days.

Wouldn’t you just love to be able to look at your relationship from the inside-out?

See what’s really in there? And perfectly clearly?

You can.

With jyotish (Vedic astrology) we have lots of tools that allow us to do that.

Jyotish is a Sanskrit word that means “Science of Light”, and it enables us to use your birth chart to truly shed light on areas of your life that you want to know more about.

And it works beautifully to reveal what’s going on in your relationship.

What We Can Discover

Using jyotish to look at your relationship is like having a diagram where you can see all the dynamics — even those previously hidden — in black and white. That’s how much information your charts reveal for you.

If you’ve been in a committed relationship for some time and want to understand more about a nagging issue, it can show what’s going on underneath the surface so you can look at it more consciously.

Or if you’re wondering about your future potential with a new person, it gives you an idea what opportunities or challenges you might face, and what you can do about them.

Some of the specific areas we can examine are:

  • family dynamics
  • money and earning potential
  • home life
  • creativity
  • intelligence
  • interests
  • career and vocation
  • romance
  • children
  • physical activity levels
  • health
  • commitment
  • opportunity
  • integrity
  • purpose or dharma
  • sexual compatibility
  • intimacy
  • openness
  • honesty and trustworthiness
  • friends
  • spiritual inclinations

… to name a few.

How We Look Into Your Relationship

One of the first things we do is look at each of your charts on its own to uncover what type of person you are in relationship and what kind of person you are looking for, or need.

You might think you already know these things but with jyotish we can look deeper and find details you’re not even aware of.

Then we can see if your partner matches your requirements. Usually they’ll match in some areas but not others.

And then we do the same with your partner’s chart, and see how well you match with their wants and needs.

Do you match each other in the important areas? We can see.

If so, we know those are harmonious areas where you’ll want to optimize your connections.

If not, I will give you remedies (what we call upayas in jyotish) and other techniques for working with them to reduce any negative impact. And sometimes just being aware of the dynamics goes a long way toward knowing how to get along more harmoniously.

Let’s take communication as an example, since that’s always important in a relationship.

First we would see how you communicate in general and how well.

Then we would do the same for your partner. Then we see how these skills operate in a committed partnership.

Then we see how your communication styles click with your partner specifically, and vice versa.

We get a lot of insight into how to match the two of you up so that even if you both operate differently, we find the common ground where you can begin to connect and grow your skills.

Relationship Timing

Besides all that, we have powerful tools for looking at timing.

Have you ever met someone and just know you have amazing potential together, yet the timing was just off? Well, we can see if it matches this time for a lasting relationship, or maybe this person or time is just for fun and romance.

And like everything else, relationships develop and change over time, and we can look at those rhythms as well.

Or maybe you’re alone right now and wondering if and when your partner’s going to show up, and how that might come about. We can look into that instead with a Whole Life Area Focus reading.

Find Out More

I’ve been doing jyotish readings for people for almost 15 years now and it still amazes me how much useful information is contained in what looks like a simple astrology chart. It would take more time than you want to spend hearing about all the possibilities.

If you want to know a little more about how it can help with your relationship, I wrote this related article (no pun intended) for a local newspaper some years back. It elaborates on the possibilities a bit more.

But probably the best way to find out is to experience a Relationship Dynamics reading yourself. It never fails to uncover fascinating and useful information. Or you can always email or call me and we can talk about what value it might have in your particular case.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, now is a perfect time for all things love-related, don’t you think? And if you’ve already had a reading with me, there’s a discount on Relationship Dynamics readings, and a double discount if both you and your partner have had readings with me.

All my readings are done by phone so it’s possible and convenient no matter where you live.

So click on the above links and check it out. Talk it over with your honey. Or if you’re ready, click here to book a time.

It might be just the perfect gift for you to give each other this week.

Float! That’s right. Just float.

Today is one of those days. I went to bed excited about the new week beginning. I tossed and turned thinking (okay, worrying) about what I would post today, trying to decide among several ideas. They tumbled around in my head all night.

But this morning, by the time I was sitting here ready to write, I couldn’t bring myself to write about any of those things. It was the last thing I wanted to do. Not because I didn’t want to write, per se, but because I felt too gloomy to want to do anything, much less write a (God-forbid) cheery or (God-help-me) helpful post.

Why? I have no idea. But we all feel like this from time to time, don’t we?

Just like in the old Larry Sanders Show when Larry’s all bummed out about being rebuffed by a woman, we sometimes want to just put on our dark glasses, lie on the couch, and say “Don’t wanna” to everything.

But we can’t always do that. Sometimes we just have too much to do. Or so we’ve decided. And so we press forward.

We try to be little troopers, but only succeed in making false starts. In the end we decide we were just wasting time, which makes us feel even worse.

I have to admit, it’s not that I even mind feeling how I’m feeling. It’s more that it’s hard to get done what I think I have to do when I’m feeling this way. So I naturally assume if I can somehow get myself to feel better, I can then breeze through my tasks.

And anyway, I tell myself, it feels good to feel good. Right?

On that premise, I visit a few inspiring blogs thinking that surely they will cheer me up. I read a post about laughter, complete with a video that I’m guessing should have got me laughing, but it didn’t. It just bored me.

But then it hit me. A reminder of something I’ve already learned, time and again.

Being In Tune With Cycles

There really is something healing about being in tune with ourselves, including our cycles. We have so many cycles influencing us from “out there” and also those that we ourselves are a part of.

There’s a New Moon tomorrow. That’s one good indication that today is a day to be finishing things instead of expecting a bright fresh energy for new beginnings. And since today is Monday, the Moon’s day, it makes that lunar energy even stronger.

Waning Moon is a good time for completing unfinished business and as I think about that, it occurs to me that I have a lot of little odds and ends that it would be good to finish up. They can suck the life right out of you if just left dangling.

And women, especially, are in tune with and responsive to lunar cycles, as well as our own related hormonal cycles. Don’t even try to tell me (or my husband, for that matter) that these don’t have an impact. Full and New Moons, especially, are influential times of the month.

It’s also gloomy outside. It’s winter here for God’s-sake! There’s a storm moving in and we’re expecting to get almost a foot of snow. It’s a perfect time to nestle in and replenish.

I imagine myself curled up on the couch with a good book, and realize that it’s not that I don’t want to do anything. I am itching to curl up with a chart that I want to look at for a client. That is calling to me. (Soon, chart, I will be there soon…)

As I look at my own chart (jyotish), I also see that right now Saturn is exactly on my Sun. As a Vedic astrologer, that speaks volumes to me, saying it’s not so odd that my light (the Sun) is feeling squashed (by oppressive Saturn) and that I am feeling heavy today for whatever reason. We all have many levels of recurring cycles going on in our lives at any given time.

Jyotish also has something called “dasas” or planetary periods, showing when certain influences will come to the fore in our lives. Right now, I have a strong Moon influence, so I am especially susceptible to this New Moon coming up tomorrow, as are you if you are running a Moon period.

Recognizing Our Sensitivity

There’s also the influence of what is going on in the world at large. I’m often affected by goings-on in the world, especially heavy, difficult events. I think we all are, it’s just that some of us are more sensitive to and aware of how it affects us.

And then there are those I love or am connected to in some strong way, and I often pick up on their moods. (Exactly at this point in typing this, my husband came into my office quite upset. It seems we missed an important filing deadline that we didn’t know about until today related to our finances. This can potentially have a major impact. See?)

But those of us who are empaths, especially, pick up on feelings of those we love from long distances too.  My husband and I regularly run the same emotional currents, even when apart. And most of us have several close loved ones we are not in touch with every day, so we never even know that’s why we were in certain inexplicable moods.

Our Own Subtle Selves

And sometimes, it really is “just us” (as if we actually could be separated from all these other influences), and there are feelings percolating to the surface related to our own feelings that we are not consciously aware of at the moment.

These can be regular emotions such as stress, or they can be intuitive feelings about our own well-being, such as a reluctance to do something because perhaps we know at a deep level that it is not what we are “supposed” to be doing.

Let It Be – aka Float

I often think that we have become a bit too removed from ourselves, from nature, and from natural cycles and events. I also think we are doing ourselves a disservice to forge ahead regardless.

So, my conclusion and recommendation is that when days like this roll around — and roll around they will — see if you can just go with the flow. Perhaps there are a few things you absolutely have to do, so you must do them. But other than that, don’t worry about how you feel and you’ll find that it doesn’t actually feel so bad even to feel bad. 🙂

For after all, at the very deepest level, there’s simply us. The abiding self that is simply enjoying being. No special moods or activities are necessary; in fact, they are irrelevant. All is well, all the time, no matter what.

And see if you can possibly respond to that call to withdraw a bit and not be in output mode, ever doing, doing, doing. You will find refreshment there, be much more together tomorrow, and be all the happier and healthier today as well. At least that’s how it works for me.

Or maybe I just needed more caffeine this morning.

Do you want to get this straightened out right now? Then let’s do it!

There’s been a huge buzz in the media and on the internet lately about the wobble of the earth forcing you into a different birth sign, and even a brand new astrological sign called Ophiuchus to further confuse things.

First off: you don’t have to change your birth sign.

Astrologers have already taken the wobble (also known as the precession of the equinoxes) into account, regardless of what a lot of scientists and so-called scientific reporters are saying. Those who claim otherwise simply haven’t done their research.

Let me explain. It’s a simple concept and will only take a minute.

The Tropical Zodiac

Most Westerners use the tropical zodiac. This is the one you find in the sun sign columns in the United States. By definition, this determines the sign placements by using the sun, not the constellations, thus the name tropical (which relates to the sun, as in “the tropics”).

Specifically, the moment of the vernal equinox, the location of the sun is declared to mark the exact beginning of Aries, the first sign of the zodiac.

That means that if you are born on the day after the vernal equinox, you by definition have an Aries sun in the tropical zodiac that’s used in the West.

This doesn’t change and is still true. It’s based on the sun and seasons so has nothing to do with the precession.

The Sidereal Zodiac

There’s another system called the sidereal zodiac. It’s used in Vedic astrology (also known as Hindu astrology, Indian astrology, or Jyotish) and by a very few Westerners. The sidereal zodiac is based on which constellation a planet actually appears to be in as we look toward it from earth, with the backdrop of stars behind it. It is not sun-based like the tropical zodiac, but star-based, thus the name sidereal which means “star”.

This is equivalent to and in complete agreement with the system used by astronomers. So if you look up and see Venus, and you see Taurus behind it, in this system you would say Venus is in Taurus.

About 2000 years ago, both of the zodiac systems lined up, and on vernal equinox, the sun actually appeared to be at 0° Aries.

So Why the Confusion?

Due to the wobble of the earth, the sun’s position in the sky as seen from earth (that’s the sidereal zodiac, remember) has since shifted backwards about 23° from where it was then.

So nowadays, the sun appears from earth to be at about 7° Pisces at the moment of the vernal equinox, not at 0° Aries.

That means that if you were born the day after the vernal equinox, you have a Pisces sun in the sidereal zodiac.

The confusion stems from the fact that the sidereal/astronomer’s (star-based) zodiac is almost 3/4 of a sign off from the tropical (sun-based) zodiac. (This is what Prof. Kunkle mentioned and what started the media frenzy.)

So you can have an Aries sun in the tropical zodiac but a Pisces sun in the sidereal zodiac. And that’s fine. They’re two different systems.

There’s Nothing New Here

But here’s the thing: this is and has been common knowledge. Astrologers have known this all along. And their systems take that into account.

By definition, the tropical zodiac does not change with the precession of the equinoxes, and the sidereal zodiac does, as it constantly shifts to account for the precession.

This is all as it should be and nothing has changed.

So, have we cleared all that up?

As for this new constellation Ophiuchus? Well. Have you ever looked up into the night sky from the mountains or desert? It’s astounding! There are hundreds of constellations! (88 official ones.) Astrology has been developed and built on a particular set of 12 (plus 27 lunar constellations in Jyotish), and there’s no reason at all for that to change.

So there really is nothing new under the sun… at least related to astrology.

And here’s hoping you rest easier tonight, by the light of that silvery moon.

I’m barely squeaking in here on time with regard to tonight’s total lunar eclipse, but eclipse energy can be tricky so I want to tell you how you can best work with it, along with a few other current influences.

So read on to find out about the astrological (Vedic) indications of the:

1. Lunar eclipse
2. Solstice
3. 2-week period in-between eclipses
4. Solar eclipse in January
5. Jupiter-Uranus conjunction on the same day

It’s helpful to know how to take advantage of all these special influences.

So here we go.

Solstice – Increase of Light

The sun will be farthest south in Earth’s sky Dec. 21 (tomorrow) at 10:47 a.m. MST, marking the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

For those in the Northern Hemisphere, this begins what is called Uttarayana, the time from winter solstice to summer solstice. Its energy is similar to that of the waxing moon (from new to full), with an increase of light and a brightening of our perceptions. This 6 month period is a good time in general for auspicious beginnings.

It relates to the movement of prana (vital energy) up the spine, from potential at the base to full actualization at the top. It’s very good for creating and manifesting as well as for spiritual realization.

Solstice day itself is auspicious as it signals a return of the light and is a nice day for celebrating the arrival of new spiritual energy for the year. It’s a day when the mind naturally becomes more still than usual. Prana enters your central spinal channel (the shushumna) and can be more easily used for inner transformation than usual. It’s a very good day for inner or spiritual actions and not so good for ordinary activities.

Total Lunar Eclipse – Quiet Time

The total lunar eclipse on Dec. 21 is especially well placed for observers in North America. The eclipse begins tonight at 11:33 p.m., the total phase  at 12:41 a.m., the greatest eclipse is at 1:16 a.m., the total phase ends at 1:53 a.m., and the eclipse ends at 3:01 a.m. (all times MST).

Eclipses indicate periods of transition and change. The actual day of an eclipse is not a good day to initiate major events or plans. However, it’s an especially powerful day for resting, quite time, and for spiritual or inner focus. Note that Vedic astrology considers each day as going from sunrise to sunrise, so technically, today is the day of the eclipse in the MST timezone.

This eclipse takes place at 5°28′ of sidereal Gemini in the lunar mansion of Mrigashira. If you know your chart positions, see if your Ascendant or any planets are at this degree. If so, you will want to take special care in areas represented by that planet for the next 2 weeks especially and the next 6 months in general.

The Time Between Eclipses – Completion

Eclipses almost always occur in pairs, and the 2 weeks in-between them is not the best time for beginning new ventures. We are also in the waning phase of the Moon, which is always best for inner work and finishing things.  So do take advantage of this and take a short reprieve to polish off 2010.

In fact, these next two weeks are an excellent time for finishing up old business, and this includes things like cleaning house and letting go of old baggage.

After the 4th you will likely feel a surge of energy and enthusiasm indicating that it is finally time to move forward and jump in with both feet.

Partial Solar Eclipse – Your Inner Self

The solar eclipse takes place on Jan. 4 (MST it is 11:40 p.m. on the 3rd) with the time of greatest eclipse at 1:50 a.m., and finishing at 4:00 a.m. It takes place at 19°43′ of sidereal Sagittarius, in the lunar mansion of Purva Ashada.

Again, if you know your chart positions, see if your Ascendant or any planets are at this degree. If so, you will want to take special care in areas represented by that planet for approximately the next 6 months. This eclipse is not visible in the United States (for more info go to this NASA site), and when an eclipse is not visible somewhere that means its effects won’t be felt as strongly.

Consider that the Sun represents our self and how we shine in the world. It will be a good day for inner/spiritual pursuits, especially to take some time out to investigate, recognize, and honor our own selves and who or what we are.

For more information (from a jyotish point of view), Liz Durkin consistenly writes fascinating articles on her blog. Here’s one about these two eclipses with some mythological background of the eclipsors Rahu & Ketu, etc.

Likewise, Christopher Kevill is a neo-jyotishi who specializes in market indications, and he has a good article about the current influences as well.

(You can always find both of these blogs in my blogroll in the right-hand sidebar.)

Jupiter-Uranus Conjunction – Opening

On the exact same day as the solar eclipse, Jupiter and Uranus will be at the exact same degree. (This only happens once every few decades.)

These planets together indicate surprise and sudden opportunities, so try to be ready if something positive comes out of the blue that you can benefit from taking action on. This happens in Jupiter’s sign of Pisces, so this opportunity may be related to water or to “other worlds” (e.g. travel, dreams, altered states, foreign or very different environments).

Interestingly, the deity of the lunar mansion in which the solar eclipse takes place is Apas, representing the cosmic waters. It will be interesting to see if there is an unexpected world event involving water around that time.

The flip side of this expansive conjunction is that it may makes you crave freedom so much that it’s hard to want to buckle down and be responsible. On the world stage, this often indicates reform and change, perhaps that which began in Sept. when these two planets were first conjunct.

The New Year – Beginnings

At this special time of new beginnings, you might want to consider getting a Jyotish Reading or Channeling Session. They both provide practical guidance and direction, help with decisions and making effective choices, and offer insight into a situation or a new point of view.

Both modalities are based on spiritual or unseen principles yet they provide practical results for your everyday living.

Channeling Sessions are uplifting and fascinating. They vary according to what you need in the moment and it’s possible you may experience the benefits of profound healing energies. Sometimes my training in Matrix Energetics is called for, which results in a beneficial shift in your energy patterns.

Or treat yourself to an informative Jyotish Reading! They are based on your personal chart and are fully customized to whatever type of guidance and insights you are looking for right now.

Note >>> I’ll be following my own advice and taking time away from blogging and from the hubbub of worldly pursuits until the 4th of January. It will be my own break, vacation, time of review, of going inward, etc. Wonderful is another word for it. 😉

Thank you so much for being with me as I initiated this new space! I wish you happy holidays and that your upcoming year be your best one ever!

Many blessings and I hope to see you again soon.

Namasté.

I’m sure you’ll agree that as we make our way through this journey called life, we inevitably run into bumps in the road. On occasion, we might even get hopelessly lost. When these things happen, being open to help even from the most unexpected sources can sometimes be the key to getting back on track.

Fifteen years ago, my husband and I walked away from high-stress software engineering careers in the San Francisco Bay Area, sold our home, packed up our belongings, and moved to a remote red rock canyon in the high desert of northern New Mexico. We needed to chill.

But right from the beginning, everything started going haywire. And I mean right from the beginning. As we got into our car in the driveway in California for the 2-day drive, the outside door handle of the driver’s door just pulled right off. Talk about an omen.

We didn’t notice at first but over the next month or so, more and more difficulties came up until it became painfully obvious that we were being buried in unresolvable issues. The movers lost some of our things and damaged others and would not reimburse us. The contractor building a bridge for us began to falsify his records and neglect his commitments. We were in escrow on our new property and everything was taking inordinately long and costing much more than had been indicated. The lady at the title company was apparently in cahoots with the seller’s realtor and we had to watch like hawks for bogus charges she occasionally put on our contract. And on and on.

One day, I saw a pattern: California smooth, New Mexico bumpy. When we lived in California, things went pretty well, and when there were difficulties they resolved fairly quickly. But here we were in New Mexico, with more stubborn issues in this short time than we had ever had in California over a 20-year period.

What was going on? Was it this place?

Well, as it turns out… it was.

Here’s how we confirmed it and where our help ultimately came from.

Someone With A Bird’s Eye View

Around that time I was talking with my brother about our ongoing issues here in New Mexico, and he told me he had gotten something called a Locational reading from a Vedic astrologer.

“A what from a what?” I asked, even as I thought “Oh, give me a break.” and rolled my eyes. The extent of my familiarity with astrology was reading sun signs in newspapers when I was a girl. Not helpful, and a little too woo-woo, even for me.

No, really, he assured me. He and his wife were considering a move and had gone to an astrologer who was able to use their charts and see how they matched certain locations. He said it was really helpful.

With nothing to lose, my husband and I made an appointment with this fellow. Let’s just see if he can tell what’s going on, we figured.

And as promised — but as we barely dared hope — the charts revealed to his trained eye a much bigger picture than we had from our perspective. He saw some significant underlying dynamics that were completely hidden from us. He could see how our unique patterns harmonized or clashed with those of this exact place.

The information we received was enlightening, to say the least. Not only was the astrologer able to point out what was going on, but he was able to give us some great guidance about how to work with the situation to make things go more smoothly as we moved forward, as well as information about timing.

I couldn’t believe it! This was really helpful! How did he do that?

Ultimately, I found it all so fascinating that I just had to look into it. Before I knew it, I was involved in a serious study of this complex art & science known as Jyotish (Vedic astrology.) Because I had been involved with Eastern spirituality for some time, I resonated perfectly with this form of Indian astrology and its integrated philosophies.

The very astrologer who did the reading for us became my main mentor & teacher and I soon became certified in this fascinating field.

It’s Not About Signs & Planets: It’s About YOU

Much to my chagrin, I had discovered that astrology wasn’t foolish after all — but I had been! On the contrary, it was powerful and comprehensive, practical and helpful, and even kind of fun! It really is enlivening learning what your chart reveals for you.

I am so glad I made it past my contempt prior to investigation and tried it out.

As I look back, I really don’t know how we would have been able to make sense of what was happening or know what to do without this amazing tool. In fact, if I’d known then what I know now, I’d have gotten a locational reading before buying property and moving.

And I didn’t have to know or care a thing about planets and signs and all that. I left it in the hands of my capable astrologer to use those things himself to reveal patterns in my life, which was all I really cared about. And to that end, it worked like a charm.

There’s a Place for Jyotish in Your Life

I love it when I get to watch people dancing through life, naturally confident of their direction, aware of all the nuances of what is influencing them, and unconcerned about what is developing. However, that’s pretty rare!

More often than not, we can all use a little insight and guidance. And Jyotish can provide that.

It really is like having a road-map of sorts. And haven’t we all learned it helps a heck of a lot to have a map?

Get Your Road-Map Here

On my Jyotish Articles page, you can find an article about what Jyotish can help you with. Not only can it address locations (oops, no pun intended) which was so helpful to my husband and me, but it can help with your career (including fulfillment and money), relationships, health, psychological tendencies, and last but not least, your spiritual nature.

Over the years since then, I’ve really enjoyed being able to offer this service and watch how it positively influences peoples’ lives. My clients are from all walks of life, and all find it valuable in their own way.

If you think this might be helpful to you or if you just want more information, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m here — yes, still in this lovely red rock canyon… and making the best of it!

Today is the first day of the 5-day Festival of Lights.

It’s a powerful time that we can either let slip by or take a moment to harness so we can direct its energy in a conscious way.

The Festival of Lights, or “Diwali” which means row of lamps, is a major holiday in India. It’s based on the lunar calendar which matches the natural rhythms of life more closely than the more arbitrary dates of our western solar calendar.

Celebrate Your Inner Light

The story behind Diwali varies by region but all agree that it’s a celebration of the victory of good over evil, of light over darkness.

This refers in part to our inner light of consciousness which dispels darkness and ignorance, including the ignorance of us as anything other than the unchanging, immanent reality. It’s the light of our presence shining through our conditioning.

It’s a time of renewal much like Christmas is for Christians.

Diwali’s also a time for honoring Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, in hopes of increasing prosperity in the upcoming year. The planet Venus is related to Lakshmi and is especially strong right now since it’s retrograde in its own sign of Libra.

Around Diwali time, there are also other holidays in various cultures that are related to the goddess Kali (the destroyer): the Celtic festival Samhain, the Day of the Dead, and Halloween. And like Diwali, they also relate in one way or another to the Moon and its relationship to the Pleiades (aka the Seven Sisters, or Krittika in Vedic astrology) where the Moon is exalted. If you look up in the midnight sky this time of year, you will see that unmistakable constellation directly above.

Tonight is also the the new Moon and this one especially is very auspicious for doing any inner work.

Natural Support to Embrace Light and Prosperity

Over the next 5 days, the planets and stars are supporting us in allowing our light to prevail over darkness in our lives and in welcoming prosperity at the same time.

In addition, the energy of people all over the world attuning to this holiday and celebrating these same gifts further increases the power of these 5 days and nights.

I definitely want to take advantage of this, and thought you might too!

5 Simple Rituals

Here are 5 short but potent rituals you can do to invite light and prosperity to become constant companions in your life.

  1. Get quiet inside. Take a little while to feel the light of your presence glowing within you. Move through your body and feel it everywhere. Notice that the light isn’t confined to your body at all.
  2. Light a candle while inviting the universe to support your light and to help it shine even brighter in the coming year.
  3. Go within and see or feel the light within you that is wanting to shine into this physical world. What form might that take as it expresses itself? See what bubbles up. Whether you know the answer or not, light a candle and acknowledge that you will do what you can to allow that expression of your light as you move forward.
  4. Take a moment to appreciate the abundance that is already yours. If you can, speak it out loud. I am grateful for __________. Or I enjoy _________. Or I love _________. Choose the one that lifts your spirits the most. Do this for at least 3 minutes.
  5. Be grateful that all that you can possibly need is already yours.

You can pick and choose, or do them all. You can do them individually or combine several into one ritual (I especially like numbers 1 and 2 combined). You can do them once or repeat them each night.

And of course, you can (and should) use your own intuition to modify or add to these ideas as you see fit. I’m sure there’s at least oneyou could customize to make it feel even more powerful to you.

And if you have any rituals you’d like to share, please do. Maybe sharing rituals is part of what wants to shine through you!

May you shine brilliantly and may fortune and prosperity be yours now and in the upcoming year. Namasté.
